Here's a question.
Little Piglet is my tiny pink dog. He happens to be deaf and blind. That's what his Facebook account is called. Piglet, the deaf blind pink puppy.
As I spend 24/7 with him bc he literally will not let me leave him for an hour, I rarely think of him as deafblind Piglet. He doesn't demand that I bring him everywhere bc he is disabled! That's who he is!
Piglet is a character, a wild edgy boy dog, a demanding dog who doesn't let challenges and obstacles get in his way of having a happy fulfilling life. Accommodating his disabilities is natural. It just happens bc it's what we do to keep him safe.
Question- Piggy's facebook account started with the goal of getting him adopted. We had to describe him so interested adopters knew he was disabled. But can he hold his own on his social media accounts without the ongoing reminder that he can't see and hear?
That used to be the case. He was adored for his hilarious precious sweet videos. Now the landscape is different. Every other account is about rescuing disabled dogs and other animals. Their disabilities are part of their appeal. It's like a social media competition at times.
Here's Piglet wearing his deaf blind dogs rock bandana. I think it's really cool. A big part of our mission is to advocate for dogs like Piglet and our little Georgie. So they got bandanas. Your dog can have one too bc you don't have to be deafblind to raise awareness and advocate!
So the answer to the question, for me, is that of course Piglet's disabilities are important to point out for the right reasons. People are afraid to adopt dogs like Piglet for the wrong reasons! Showing them how well Pigley and Baby Georgie do is very helpful.
I guess it's a mix and certainly Piglet's disabilities are part of his identity on social media.
