Attention citizens of Earth! But especially my NC Comboland friends: Some very cool tunes are being released tomorrow! I got a chance to hear them a bit early and was quite impressed. You must check out Secret Monkey Weekend, Jefferson Hart, Ella Brown Hart, and Lila Brown Hart. They have a CD release party tomorrow night at the Cat's Cradle in the Back Room, which I wish I could attend. I know many of my friends close to Chapel Hill will be there, and also some coming from as far away as Ohio!! Check out these tunes tomorrow!! Excellent stuff here. Show them some love! All of the links you need are on their website. https://secretmonkeyweekend.com/home

Damnit...

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our brother and bandmate, Joe Yerry. Joe died quietly on Wednesday morning, May 5, 2021, after suffering a stroke on April 15th. He was 49 years old. Although Joe’s life ended before we were ready, the time we got with him was memorable and full of joy. Joe was a founding member of The Bleeding Hearts and played with us through all the ups and downs over the last 20 years. He lived for music and loved playing guitar. A true rock’n’roller with a heart of gold. Rest easy dear friend.

Wow... I really hate to post this.

It is with great sadness that we share more hard news with you this week.

Longtime WWOZ show host Ron Phillips has passed, suddenly. On Tuesday, he enjoyed an evening out with friends and had a wonderful time, and when he returned home he had a sudden heart attack and died.

Ron had been a show host at WWOZ for almost ten years, serving as a substitute host for several years, before settling into Saturday mornings as the host of Weekend New Orleans from 10am to 12 noon. Ron loved music, especially New Orleans music, and cared deeply about WWOZ and his show, always trying to connect to his listeners on more than just a surface level. He worked hard on the air to encourage positivity, especially during the pandemic this last year. He was devoted to his mother Joyce in North Carolina, and featured her recently on his show, via a phone call on her birthday.

He will be missed by his friends, and by his WWOZ family, and he will be remembered well. Our thoughts go out to his family, and to all who knew him.
