verb: "to face"

Action/Words Poetry Contest seeks submissions that call for, enact, or reflect upon connections between poetry and praxis. Each fall, the Midway team will select a verb to serve as the “action word” and theme for that year’s contest. This year, we have selected the verb “to face.” We welcome writers to submit poems that respond directly or indirectly to the various meanings of this term.

Up to 3 poems per entry. Any style. No word limits. No more than one poem per page.

Koss was named the third-place finisher in this year’s -1000 Below: Flash Prose and Poetry Contest. Here is the link to their award-winning selection, “How to Avoid or Survive a Crocodile Attack,” chosen by our judge, Lee Horikoshi Roripaugh:

Koss had this to say about their own work:

“While not always quick to jump on the “constraint” wagon in crafting, telling a story through a “hermit crab”--type piece of writing yielded some surprising results, i.e. the emotional distancing and subsequent amplification of the message through that suppression and structural curtailment. Of course, my experience as a reader/writer will be different than a reader’s, but still…”

Emma Kaiser was named honorable mention in this year’s -1000 Below: Flash Prose and Poetry Contest. Here is the link to her award-winning selection, “Mushroom Hunting: A Villanelle for the End of the World,” chosen by our judge, Lee Horikoshi Roripaugh:

https://midwayjournal.com/mushroom-hunting-a-villanelle-for-the-end-of-the-world/

Emma had this to say about her own work:

“I wrote this piece thinking about climate and patriarchy and scarcity, and as a way to make sense of the difference between dependence and mutual partnership within romantic love. The idea of relying on someone too greatly makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but being in the woods and thinking about the basic tenets of survival also forces me to appreciate the nourishment that a true partner can provide--both physically and emotionally. To be able to work through these ideas in a villanelle form allows me to circle the topic in layers, with each refrain revealing a bit more each time the words or phrases are repeated.”
