It's almost hoop time! In "New Coach, New Era for Boys Basketball," Karlah Benzan goes in-depth on the talk of the town-- the boys varsity b-ball team-- who are making waves all over campus.

Whether it's bonding during lunch, hanging out between the bells, attending team study sessions serving the Lower School via Read Alouds, conducting Shoe Drives to help the community, the boys basketball team is growing into a program.

Benzan dives into what that program is-- and it all starts with Coach Sutton.

Head to the site for this In-Depth Feature. Link in bio.

This past summer, Saint Stephen’s appointed a new varsity boys basketball head coach, Mr. Kevin Sutton. Since his arrival in August, Sutton has stepped into the role with a mission: to transform the boys basketball program. Sutton brings over 40 years of coaching experience, starting his career im...

What is the best HOCO event? A lot of folks say Dance-Off, or Float/Skit, or Falcon Fued, or even the Relay Race.

But the hidden gem of HOCO, for many, is the Banner. Banner members, past and present, find themselves "growing up" together as artists over the years, coming together every fall for the Homecoming grind to craft the most artistic, most creative, and most technically sound banner they can for their classes.

In "Behind the Banner: the Hidden Gem of HOCO," Lark Rippy, Haiel Suwaity, and Bianca Figueroa document what it means to be part of banner production during spirit season. Edited by Haiel Suwaity.

Varsity Boy’s Golf Team Surges Again. Story by Julie Harris.

On Monday, the team secured another huge win at the Manatee County Championship at Heritage Harbor.

The boys won in excellent fashion, shooting 14-under as a team, winning over rival Lakewood Ranch HS, who shot even par. Junior Chase Nicks took home medalist honors with a low 65, and golfer Andy Dai took a close second one shot behind.

Captain Fergus McLeod was especially proud of the win from this year, calling this a “standout victory.”

“We beat Lakewood Ranch, who were on a 3 or 4 year in a row streak,” on at Counties, said McLeod.

The team this year has also seen improvements from all players, particularly Chase Nicks.

“Chase’s scoring average has gotten lower and lower,” said McLeod. “He plays good at tournaments.”

The boy’s golf team is now preparing for districts, which will be held on October 27th at Calusa Country Club. Good luck Falcons.

In “When Books are Banned, Students Miss Out,” staffer Lexi Mascera explores the national news plug/trend about recent book challenges in high schools across the nation, and how these texts being removed has a negative impact on students.

Mascera writes, “Challenging books in schools interrupts learning and undermines a teacher’s professional knowledge. We need to remember that the purpose of an English class is to analyze texts of all types… and healthy discussion with classmates is a part of that curriculum.”

In her Feature titled ‘When it Happens in Your Hometown’, freshman Afton Cox shares: “My cousins Judah and Keegan Cox attend Evergreen High School in Colorado, where one month ago a shooter came to their hometown.”

In the wake of the events at Evergreen, Judah wrote and performed a song called “Hometown” on his Instagram page, an act that struck a chord with the nation. Judah was asked to share his story and song across multiple national news platforms, and Afton was able to channel that story in her Feature.

Just married!

Following a long-time tradition (shoutout to the OG’s from marriages past!), “The Gauntlet Gets Married” happened today. The team building exercise is meant to symbolize having gotten to know each other and become a trusting team, one that can work together to cover the stories of our community.

To begin with, staffers gave shoutouts or “toasts” to members who’ve helped them, or stood out in class. The ceremony was followed with a “reception.” Good times!

Check out some pics from the festivities.
