Where do the Swans go from here?
Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. We're all feeling it. The club, the players, the staff, friends, family, members, fans alike.
We've been spoiled the last 25 years. We've made more Grand Finals than any other team yet have 2 flags to show for it. Longmire's done a great job rejuvenating the list on the fly, giving the club chance after chance to win a flag. But one must wonder if being punished in their last two swings is enough to put an end to it all.
Port Adelaide took years to rebound after their 2007 smashing, almost going broke and pe***ng up tarps across the stands.
Sydney's gone from strength to strength despite the harrowing performances, surpassing 75k members this season.
Can Longmire get the club his 2nd premiership? I don't think so. I've always been a fervent Longmire supporter, and I've felt vindicated from 2020. But how do you explain yesterday? The preparation was not right, despite what the players and coaches say. How could it be when the players don't even show up for the 3rd time in a decade.
2022 could be excused by the opposition, apparent youth and inexperience of the side, injuries, etc. But this was a debacle. Solid favourites, best team by a mile all year, were 4 games clear at the top mid-round multiple times.
What change can we make? Is it time for Longmire to step away from the club, shake hands and concede his best isn't good enough to push them over the line. He's famous for his occasionally ruthless and unemotional approach, but then you compare that with someone like Chris Fagan who approaches the club like a family.
It's easy to waggle the finger after this one, but the game was lost before Saturday. Change is needed, it has to start at the top.
