I learned my lesson when we built the first part of the house: conduit is more labor, but worth it in the end. 🤣

Remember to label your plumbing. That's a lesson we learnt after creating a fabulous new manifold after our pressure pumps and then leaving for a few weeks. We didn't label which valve went where. Oops!

It's been 5 years since we dropped a Grundfos SQFlex well pump down the well and I'm still pretty impressed. The magic of the SQFlex is that you can feed it DC power from 30-300V *OR* AC power from 90-240V and it'll sort it out down at the bottom of your well. Why would you want that? So you can power your pump directly from solar panels, or a wind turbine and still be able to just hook up mains power or an AC generator when the sun isn't shining.

I'm really digging wool insulation. With the addition project slowly chugging ahead it was time to insulate one of the rooms and we opted for a 100% sheeps wool batt form Havelock as it was less expensive than the recycled cotton insulation we'd been looking at and I hate working with fiberglass. So far so good, the batts are a pain in the rump to cut (don't even try using a razor knife to cut it, you need some BIG scissors to do it right), but aside form that they are substantial enough to snugly fit in the wall spaces without drooping and they don't smell like sheep. The cost is higher than fiberglass, as you'd expect, but I think I'm on with that for now.

Look what my fabulous husband designed for me, a PVC solvent caddy that holds cleaner, primer, and cement along with some tools. It features a 9 inch steak so you can drive it into the ground near where you’re trying to repair an irrigation line. Hopefully this will solve the problem of a primer bottle rolling away and losing half its contents. 🤣

California poppies always make us smile. Despite being California's state flower, they are also native to Oregon, Washington, Nevada, New Mexico, and Northern Mexico. It's drought-tolerant, self-seeding, and it's even edible! What does it taste like? Nothing magical, it's slightly sweet and grassy. 😅

When you live in a small house, “working from home” means laptop on the kitchen table, surrounded by laundry and the supplies for whatever project is happening this week 😂

I was really unsure about these DIG solar powered sprinkler timer valves, but after 2 years I’m sold. They don’t seem to need much sun to water once a week for an hour and it’s made a huge difference to our yew hedge and our bamboo garden. The downside is that they are about $80. 👍

Thinking about a wood fired hot tub? We finally took the plunge and here's what we learned: First, I'm glad we opted for this Dundalk square tub as it's lighter and uses less water than a round tub for two would have. It will also be easier to clean because the inside is aluminum. It's basically a big aluminum tub with cedar plank around it to insulate it and make it look cuter.

The wood stove part isn't made by the same company (It's made by Aleko), we got that separate because the ones that sit inside the hot tub seem silly. They take up room and you end up with wood chips and ash in the water.

Firing things up takes some practice. Too much wood and you'll overshoot your intended temperature, too little wood and the water jacket makes the fire hard to start.

Also: be prepared to change the water frequently as it doesn't have a filter. We'll be diverting the waste water to our grey water recycling system but you could always water plants with the runoff as well. We're contemplating adding a low wattage circulation pump and filter soon, so stay tuned...

This is what’s left of a nearly 20 year old Japanese maple that we trucked around in a pot from place to place before it landed in its “forever home.” A ~18 inch diameter oak tree fell over in the storm and the upper half of it crushed the maple. Thankfully the acer family of trees are quite resilient. Our plan is to put some protective latex sealant on the broken limbs and see what happens. After a few years of corrective pruning it shouldn’t be *too* bad… 😂
