If the mountain seems too big today then climb a hill instead;
If morning brings you sadness it’s okay to stay in bed.
If the day ahead feels heavy and your plans feel like a curse,
There’s no shame in rearranging, don’t make yourself feel worse.
If a shower stings like needles and a bath feels like you’ll drown;
If you haven’t washed your hair for days, don’t throw away your crown!
A day is not a lifetime.
A rest is not defeat.
Don’t think of it as failure, Just a quiet, kind retreat.
It’s okay to take a moment
From an anxious, fractured mind.
The world will not stop turning
While you get realigned!
The mountain will still be there
When you want to try again
You can climb it in your own time, Just love yourself till then! - Laura Ding Edwards
There was many a dark day when I was bed-bound with M.E that I’d think of this poem, I always used to be so hard on myself when I just couldn’t, the frustration I’d feel when normal day to day tasks were out of my grasp and I’d beat myself up for feeling like a failure even though I knew in my logical mind that it wasn’t my fault. It took years and years of growth and strength to give myself the grace to just be. To learn that a little was a lot when you feel like you’re drowning and small wins are still wins. Even now when I’m so much better than I used to be I have to stop myself from being unkind to myself for needing a days rest but it comes so much easier than it used to. Take yesterday, I did a tough reformer Pilates class and then padleboarded and swam all afternoon, so today is a rest day, and that’s ok☺️. So on those days where you just don’t feel good enough, remind yourself of this poem too and be kind to yourself because your best is good enough, whatever that looks like💋
