Day 3 of Drydock | Small gestures matter

Once again the hectic day started with hustle. Yard guys kept coming whenever they needed something. Morning we have toolbox meeting at 0800. Then ship top officers have morning meeting at 0830 to 0930.
Yard people work hours is so different than ours, they work from 0830 to 1130 then 1400 to 1730. I like the way they plan everything. You get to see how such things work all together with so many people whose life depends on this.
Just a work of 6 hours for officers with not bad but good salary. For workers they sometimes change or do shift, and sometimes officers too have to do overtime, but rarely at all.

Pic 1 and 4 - A man of fathers age came and started cotrrecting my helmet. I left him free, though we couldn’t understand each other. I liked the sweet gesture of him. This normally happens in our home too, when our parents correct our caps or shirt buttons etc.

Pic 2 and 3- Me who escaped to walk to land. My friend from china invited me to visit his flat, before! went thrugh dinner at Chinese western restaurant

Pic 5- A section of pipe has been disconnected. It is a connection removed from LT system before cooler. Valve has to be replaced. As it is a big valve, it requires manforce and also becomes big job specialt when we have to look for our safety in managing heavy objects

Pic 6- Central cooler being cleaned. Also such jobs are done when we have ample amount of time.
It’s a big cooler compared to any LPG ships.

Pic 7- Condition of bottom deck of engine room of a ship during drydock

Pic 8- Air bottles have been cleaned and painted. We use special paint coat inside air bottles, if anyone can comment what we call this one.

Pic 9, 10- Chief cook made samosa other dishes.

There is one thing good about me is that people like my company, not all for sure 😂😜 But if you have socialising and good nature with a motive of “no friends with benefit” then I connect easily.
6th August- Our ship is still in China and we are here for a month. Some of us i,e ship crew decided to visit nearby restaurant for trying out western food. Ordered Chilli chiken, surprised to see actual red chillies 🌶️ In India, we get the sausage chicken instead. I thought to give it a try. With one moment my mouth was burning 🔥 🥵 and I ran to washroom to clear my throat 😂😂 I said never again to experiment outside. How can someone eat red chillies directly, why is it even in menu 😂😂
Luckily I ordered fried rice which met my expectations. Bill came and they asked to pay in yuan, while none of had it. 😂 Luckily I was carrying some cash. If you have visa cards then you can take out cash of any currency in any country through atm. I paid the amount and later went to supermarket.

I made a Chinese friend who is a supervisor for yard works. Both of our jobs are different, although we both are officers. He has to inspect and monitor the work progress and job planning. For me I have to monitor, inspect, plan and do the job too by myself. So all in all it involves full you.

His name is Yeda. I said it’s a funny name in India. Later he invited me to see his flat and during our way in we discussed about college university flats inside campus is similar to this.
There were 2 x2 tier bed inside his room. It’s like 1 rk room with basin area, toilets and room. But they have got desk and bed from company in free, because of his work. It was good to know many things about him and his family. Btw he is from famous place wuhan. Livelihoodis similar that of India. But for sure due to app bans, we have to suffer. None of American apps work here or I can’t even download or see in app store.
Let’s end this memory here and see you in next post of drydock day. And not to forget he offered me a bracelet as a token of friendship. Same we do in India correct ☺️☺️ In return I grabbed him a can of beer and paid for his dinner. 😅

Day 2 of drydock
So once we were in dry dock, a lots of people entered inside our ship. Plenty of railings and support installed for location access. Cabled started laying off.
Shore power- Sooner after 2 days it was decided to have shore power. With isolation of generators, we are free to work on MGE, boilers and economisers. Once this was done, boiler and economiser mountings were removed, will continue this in another picture.
Pic 1- Me standing on bottom deck infront of an overhauled ballast pump motors. For this sea water system has been isolated by closing both sea chest. Still in wet dock though
Pic 2,3Additional steam valves that we received for replacement. We have to do it ourselves 😏
Pic 4- A condensate valve which was leaking needs to be replaced from the new one.
Pic 5- a very big motor of blast pump being carried out by five persons using chain block
Pic 6- just a view of ship and see at night
Pic 7- AC compressor is running and motive of this picture is to show how how cables, cooling water pipes, air pipelines etc have been laid
Pic 8- Overhauled section of motor
Pic 9 and 10- picture 9 and 10 are very important because this is a picture which you will rarely see. It’s a picture of alternator and we hardly open this one, So opportunity of dry dock is utilised and generator guys are working on alternators and various systems
By the way, is where electricity is produced by the rotating magnetic field
I hope you like this information. Do share with your friends and credits so that they can have a better overview of the ship.

Dry dock Day 1/10

As soon as we reached china, pilot boarded, then came again another pilot who took us to the dock wiere our ship was supposed to be having dry dock.
Dry dock is basically you can understand, ship is like immobilized completely of all the systems as any repair or maintenance can be carried out. A place where a ship can be built or repaired. Dry docks can be pumped dry to enable hull repairs and maintenance.

However, as everything is now budget and which ever things fall under class survey or 5 yearly inspection, is mostly done during this time.
So let’s begin with a new picture cm series, where I wil be posting pictures until day 30, staring with with my picture at the beginning and ending with mine again followed by different jobs we do on dry dock. I am an engine side merchant navy officer onboard LNG ship, which means I am a marine engineer officer, so you may find engine side job pictures more. As I am not very consistent so I decided to put only 10 days of pics instead of 30 days pictures of drydock works.
We reached on Saturday eve, and another day was Sunday, we knew there will be no sat-Sunday for sure. The next day started with lots of meetings and planings. The good part about drydock is you get to see a lot of machinery overhauls. The good part I look for is to have shore leave. Unfortunatley we are at some island, and it’s been 5 days we haven’t received shore passes or passport yet. So this is the bad part that we are only limited to this island. But no worries we will explore it as well once we have it.

So work began, lots of stuff started getting onbard with lots of people. I feel we have plenty people to see and talk too, unlike sailing time. And at the end of the day I go out to supermarket in this island. Let’s continue more in Day 2/30 of drydock

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all!

Chikmagalur Trip - Day 2
Sun was still to come out of the clouds. I was the first one to wakeup, as I have a habit of waking up early and sleeping on time. Also when the sun rays hits the eye lid, I could hardly manage to sleep.

Time kept passing and everyone was awake. People freshened up and joined breakfast which was going to begin at 0830 hours. Once again, tripple trail's captains intervene to introduce today's itinerary which included Yagachi backwater activities and Sri chenakeshawara temple (Belur).
Before leaving finally from the camp, we had a group photo session. Once again we boarded the bus, and left off the place to experience something new.
Yagachi backwater activities was full of action. People took a lot of rides. However I hardly felt any interest in it. On ship I am incharge of LSA which included life boat and rescue boat. I had a habit of lowering these to sea. But here I felt so confined because normally I used to do maintenance and also run rescue/life boat. I don't like to sit behind 😅😜 So I escaped to enjoy the view and kept watching bags of people as someone utilised me to look for their stuffs 🤐🙄🙄😬

Hunger was speaking and I was silent, well everyone was achieving same state. We went to restaurant to fill up our stomach. Finally we were at temple, did some prayers, roamed around for pictures and left back for Bangalore.

Captains introduced us to Mafia game which shocked me😅. The game showed how clever a person can be 🥹🤣😂 Sooner everyone reached back to their home in Bangalore and the trip ENDED!

People on the next day went to work, while I am still looking for another trip....🌧️☁️

Trip to Chikmagalur
It all started with a booking portal. By the time we gathered to board the bus, we realised we know none. But who knew we won't be unknowns to each other and this would be the starting of new beginnings ❤️
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
We Trippers, are going to Chikmagalur! ☺
We boarded the bus in the night. Captains introduced themselves and this is from where all the fun started. They asked us to exchange seats and start conversation with anyone. Later we were knowing everyone's name. Before sleep, we have a great musical dance session.
Day 1
We reached the place of stay called 'Alpha camp'. It was completely new for me to stay in a tent camp. However after freshening up, we headed to breakfast where captains debriefed about the locations we were going to cover on the first day.
At first we went to Jhari falls. Although being crowded destination, what I enjoyed was journey through woods.
We had Maggie as our major lunch, and guys together liked it so much that they order for the 4th time the same thing! 😅 Traffic is also an issue at such places because of which we missed to visit one of the lakes. Anyways after lunch we went to Milyangiri peak. This was like a trekking. We climed the hill to see the amazing views front the top.
We were back to camp by 2000 to have dinner and played some games together. Captains always stood energetic to make sure we all have some memories to never last.
We played musical chair and later at late night people went to sleep. I was already into sleep by 2am too. Woke up at 6am to see beautiful weather outside and the day 2 trip is about to begin 🥹☺️☺️

At last I added swimming pool pic, dimag thanda rhega 😅

Some people have the gift of making others laugh 😃😅😁 And having someone around like him, is a boon on ship.
