Shoutout to Jeff Cross and Chuck Violand for their conversation on ISSA’s Straight Talk 🙌

My key takeaway...

Cleaning business owners cannot afford to micromanage if they want to scale their organization.

Empower your people to take charge in their roles and trust that they can help move the needle.

Highly recommend listening to the entire convo here ➡️

As a BSC, here’s how you stand out from the competition...

Proactively reach out to clients about the service you’re providing.

Many BSCs don’t maintain regular communication with clients.

This is your opportunity to shine.

Share the wins, ask for feedback, and build that relationship. 🤝

Do you agree?

Two years ago, if I had a nickel every time, I fell on my butt...

I swear I would be a billionaire.

This is around the time I started playing hockey.

The learning curve was steep, and I spent a lot of time falling and getting back up.

But I stuck with it, and after over 2 years of practice and persistence, I've grown a ton as a player...

This journey reminds me a lot of being an operator in a cleaning business.

Just like in hockey, there's a giant learning curve when you're starting out.

You're figuring out the best systems, how to manage your team, and how to deliver top-notch service to your clients.

It’s challenging, and sometimes you stumble...

But if you stick with it, keep learning, and keep pushing forward, you'll see tremendous growth and success.

So, whether you’re on the ice or running a cleaning business, remember...

The key is persistence and a willingness to keep learning and improving. 💪🏒

Your client signing the contract is NOT the most important part of the relationship.

Winning the bid is great, but it’s just the start...

With traditionally high client turnover rates in the cleaning industry, it’s vital to keep your clients happy with elite operations.

What does this look like?

Having a system to deliver quality work, track employee performance, and update your clients with reporting.

These are the ingredients to making clients happy...

And upsells easy 🚀

Incoming truth bomb... 💥

I recently went on vacation for 2 weeks...

At the gym, I overheard someone saying they were on vacation too but needed to rush back to their room to check on their employees before the day started because he felt they wouldn’t be productive without him checking in...

I don’t know this guy or his role, but I do know one thing: I didn’t feel the need to check in with my team during my vacation.

If I’m taking time off, I trust my team to move the needle without me.

Without a doubt, I know each one of my employees, including great leaders like Sam Clayton and Shay Hope, can hold down the fort while I’m gone.

This allows me to use my vacation to take a break and spend time with my family.

This says a lot about your culture.

If you’re worrying about your team’s productivity while you’re away, you may need to re-evaluate your leadership.

Setting up a quality management system that tracks employee performance is an operational cheat code when getting ahead of customer complaints 🚀

Here’s a truth bomb from Koby O'Hara on the ConnexFM podcast:

“We expect a lot out of people, we treat them well, and we celebrate their wins.”

This is the core of creating a great company culture, especially in the commercial cleaning sector.

Push your people to become better professionals and celebrate their successes 🎉

You’ll see employee turnover lower and engagement from your staff skyrocket!

You guys might know from my weekly hockey posts how much I love hockey as a fan and as a player. 🏒

I play in a rookie hockey league, and Sam and I are the team captains.

One of our responsibilities is to set the starting lineup.

Even with our rookie league team, setting an effective lineup is VITAL to our success as a team...

I could even go as far as saying that it’s just as important as ex*****on on the ice.

If you have the wrong people, working with the wrong team, in the wrong roles, your team will never score.

For example, I play Center and enjoy assisting others to score.

Sure, I could play wing and score more goals...

But would I score as much as the teammate with the best skillset for playing wing? And would that teammate have the skills necessary to play Center?

The same should be accounted for in your cleaning business.

Understand your team’s unique strengths and weaknesses and how they generally go about their work.

And then dive deeper into who works well with who.

You’re building your dream team this way, not only setting up your business to thrive but also helping your employees develop better professionally.

*Meeting starts*

“Hey, how’re you doing?”

“I’m good.”

Sound familiar?

In a world where everyone is rushing to get things done, we often ask, "How are you?" and get the usual "I'm good" before moving on.

The truth is, most of us aren't always "good," but we say it anyway to keep up appearances.

Take a couple of minutes to be more open with the people you talk to. It breaks down barriers and encourages honesty. Be real!

And if an employee says, “I’m good,” take a minute to dig a little deeper.

Ask a follow-up question about their personal life or how a project is going.

I did this in a coaching call, and our five-minute honest chat became the most important part of our 30-minute conversation!
