🤔 Are Lie Detectors Reliable? 🤔

Lie detectors, also known as polygraphs, have long been used to determine if someone is telling the truth or not. But the big question is: Do they actually work? Let's break it down! 📉🔍

How Polygraphs Work
A polygraph measures physiological responses such as:

❤️ Heart rate
🫁 Breathing rate
💧 Sweat gland activity
The theory is that when a person lies, these physiological responses will change. 📊

Reliability Concerns
Accuracy Issues ❓: While proponents claim high accuracy, many studies suggest polygraphs are not foolproof. Factors like anxiety, nervousness, or even certain medical conditions can skew results.
False Positives 🚫: Innocent people might fail a polygraph due to nervousness.
False Negatives ❌: Some skilled liars might pass without detection.
Legal and Ethical Issues ⚖️
In many places, polygraph results are not admissible in court due to their questionable reliability.
Ethical concerns arise about the stress and potential for misuse.

While polygraphs can provide some insights, they are not 100% reliable. Always approach their results with caution and consider them as just one part of the bigger picture. 🕵️‍♂️🔍

Hi I’m Stacey Nye. I’m a clinical psychologist by day, podcast creator by night. I met Julie Drost Lokun at a creators conference and we immediately hit it off. One of our shared passions was true crime, but neither of us had ever done a true crime podcast. I told her about the story that defined my senior year of high school, the nearly 45-year-old unsolved slaying of Sue Ovington and Eyvonne Bender. That was the day this podcast was born.

Coming this September, to mark the anniversary of their tragic deaths, Murder in Morton Grove will take a deep dive into the details of the case. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest for the truth and Justice for Sue and Eyvonne.
