in 1804 Alexander Hamilton died. After a fitful night, his last hours were spent in the presence of his family and friends. He was attended by Reverend Benjamin Moore, who, because he disapproved of dueling, was initially reluctant to administer last rites. He eventually relented after Hamilton vowed to use his influence against dueling if he lived and expressed forgiveness towards Aaron Burr.

Eliza remained at his side until the end. David Hosack, his physician, related that Hamilton was overwhelmed with emotion when his seven children were gathered before him. At 2 o’clock that afternoon, Hamilton died. His final letter to Eliza, to be delivered on the event of his death, ended “With my last idea, I shall cherish the sweet hope of meeting you in a better world. Adieu best of wives and best of women. Embrace all my darling children for me.”

“Legacy. What is a legacy, it’s planting flowers in a garden we never get to see.”- Hamilton: An American Musical

Today we remember the legacy of Alexander Hamilton, whose story is the quintessential American dream. From his arrival in the colonies as an orphan to serving as a critical advisor to George Washington both during the Revolutionary War and as the first Secretary of Treasury, his influence is still felt today, perhaps nowhere more so than at the Grange, which remains a living memorial to his memory and influence.

This week we pause to honor the memory of the lives lost and the families forever changed by the East St. Louis Race Massacre of 1917.

And we also honor the resilience of our community.

History lives in the streets we walk and in the stories we teach.
We are committed to building a future grounded in truth, healing, and unity.

In the antebellum South, denim fabric was often publicly referred to as "Negro cloth". This term was used to stigmatize and identify enslaved people because they were the primary wearers of this coarse, durable fabric. Denim, initially used for work clothing, was later adopted by various social groups, including cowboys and later even becoming a symbol of rebellion.

This term was a derogatory and racist way of referring to the denim fabric worn by enslaved people in the South.

While Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis are credited with patenting blue jeans in 1873, the knowledge of indigo dyeing and denim use came from enslaved people.

Over time, denim evolved beyond its association with slavery, becoming a symbol of rebellion, workers' rights, and even mainstream fashion.
