Thank god.

Everyone from Madonna to President Donald Trump's ex-wife Marla Maples dabbled in the mystical religion, but over the last few years, the trend has fallen out of style.

A man named Chris Raynerson has taken it upon himself, as a hobby, to determine what the *actual* top songs are in America by manually combining chart data from the American Top 40 Chart; Billboard Hot 100 Chart; Spotify Top 50 in USA; Top 50 Popular Music Videos on YouTube; Top 100 Purchased Music in USA on iTunes; Most Used Songs on Musical.ly in USA; and Top 30 Songs in Mediabase Radio's Top 40/CHR Chart.

His findings? Hip-Hop/Rap is huge on Spotify, yet Country is huge on iTunes.

Check out this examination of the rise of the internet microcelebrity, aka a basic explainer of why everyone is The Absolute Worst. The article asks, what can really be gained by a small amount of viral fame? What happens to the vast majority of internet “celebrities?” And who are people even really performing for?

“Rewards exist for doing very little, and those who are rewarded are buoyed to the forefront of the internet’s consciousness where they… well… no one really knows what will become of them. Will they parlay social-media fame into a run for Congress? Will they live-tweet their death? Are they okay? Does this matter?”

The quest for fame will destroy us

Last night “Take Off”, one of the tracks from Britney Spears’ lost album, Original Doll, was released by songwriter Michelle Bell. It was co-written by Britney with Bell, and produced by Bloodshy & Avant and was about “being tolerant about gay people.”

She only spoke of Original Doll in one radio interview. Her label didn’t know of its existence. It was never released, but as Bell proves, it’s not lost forever. Here is the secret history of her lost album.

Fan of K-Pop? Read this interesting, receipt-filled polemic about the pop star-making industry and its race problems:

“K-pop companies, like a lot of other celebrities in other genres, have realized that the best way to market yourself as more socially desirable or interesting is to engage in black culture without actually being black. They take a bastardized version of Black American culture, cosplay in it until they get what they want, then they leave it, or continue to exploit it.”

Someone has created a detailed spreadsheet of the new cast of Twin Peaks before it airs this Sunday, because everyone from Michael Cera to Balthazar Getty is set to star. It’s exhausting.

Each of the cast members gets a short description of how you might know them (Madchen Amick “Plays Betty's mom in Riverdale”, for example). Forget the mangled plot and mussed-up mystery, all you really need to know is which D-list celebs will make a cameo.
