"Americans and Europeans have their laws legitimizing same-s*x marriages, endorsing the “transition” of males into females and vice versa, the hormonal treatment of “trans” children to alter the development of their ge***alia, reshaping of ge***alia of “inters*x” children, the growing popularity of “female ge***al cosmetic surgeries” even among teenagers, not to mention neonatal or underage male circumcision. With the exception of male circumcision, many of these trending cultural practices are anathema to our cultural and religious beliefs, values and social structures in Sierra Leone. Yet, we respect the rights of citizens in western and other countries to do what is in their best interest with regard to their bodies and the children under their care. We expect no less as mothers in Sierra Leone".

"Last year, I participated in several academic workshops, conferences and panels across three continents - Europe, North America and Africa - along with dozens of other superb researchers from multiple, intersecting disciplines, to discuss our various research on themes that converge on the 'harms' of FGM campaigns, policies and criminal legislation as well as the burgeoning of other 'non-medical' ge***al alterations of children and adults around the world."

Unraveling the unintended “harms” of FGM policies and legislation: What these forward thinking, multi-disciplinary, global scholars are saying and doing about it….

Sexual Meanings of The Sowie Mask in Sierra Leone

The Sowie Mask is a sacred symbol of (female) s*xuality and control over (male) pleasure and fertility - yes, Bondo is all about harnessing the secret and power of female or**sm.

Today of all days I celebrate my Bondo and Sande intiation into one of the world’s oldest surviving matriarchies - a powerful, traditional, authentic, original African female sodality owned, controlled, managed and preserved by women for women. No amount of postmodern, intersectional feminism can compete w/the knowledge and wisdom of our great female ancestors. Oh, the benefits of our excision procedure? Just ask millions of western women and adolescent girls who pay thousands of dollars for labiaplasties and clitoroplasties to imitate the same!! Stay tuned for the relaunch of SiA Magazine!!!

When Wi-Fi connectivity is non-existent, it’s time to get caught up on the latest intellectual controversies in my related fields…

I probably would never have picked up Dr. Carol Hooven’s (Harvard University) recent publication if her panel had not been “cancelled” at last November’s American Anthropological Association annual conference. I can’t wait to give my small take on this exciting debate regarding the (non)existence of binary s*x and what this means for many indigenous African cultures like my own, the Kono.

Props to our own Sandemusu!! I’m so excited to attend Naasu’s talk this evening at Yale!

TD Holiday Fellows Dinner and Lecture with Naasu Fofanah: “Impact of Mende Sande Secret Society on Women’s Leadership: My Personal Journey”

The evening will feature Naasu Fofanah, award-winning social entrepreneur and author from Sierra Leone who has worked tirelessly on issues on women’s and girl’s rights. Her talk, titled “Impact of Mende Sande Secret Society on Women’s Leadership: My Personal Journey,” will honor the memory and work of the late Dr. Sylvia Boone, Yale art historian and former TD resident fellow. Naasu is currently serving as a World Fellow at Yale this semester.

I’ve never really been the 9 to 5 office type so am so grateful to be afforded the privilege of working with women in the field, on the ground, in my own communities in Kono. Here these female elders were recounting stories of delivering babies during the protracted civil war while in displaced persons camps, describing the rudimentary techniques they used for the “danger” cases - breach, stillborn etc…

Back in the U.S. this past January, I started jogging daily to train for a 5K marathon as a way to cope w/the powerlessness and unfathomable pain of loss.

Moving “home” to my land of heritage in Sierra Leone a month later and surrounding myself w/extended family and loved ones also helped me to regain my identity and life purpose.

Every where I stayed, the first thing I looked around for was a clearing where I could “grief run” in the mornings. Invariably, it would be the dirt fields of the nearest primary school.

Watching the neighborhood boys (and kick a— girls!) play w/slippers or barefoot kicking around deflated soccer balls would remind me of how lucky and privileged I was even as a struggling stay-at-home soccer mom in my previous life in Bethesda.

So, being able to provide second-hand, quality sneakers and to buy new soccer balls from the nearest market was the least I could do to bring a smile to the many small faces that stared at this strange “aunty” w/headphones on, running countless, tearful laps in their midst.

Seeing some of these same boys scrubbed up in their new uniforms coming to greet me on their first day of school moved me deeply. There really is no greater reward…
