At SLEEP 2025, Korea-based HoneyNaps unveiled a cloud version of its SOMNUM AI-powered sleep software.

The new SOMNUM Cloud, an AI solution for automated analysis of PSG data, allows users to upload EDF files extracted from PSG systems to the cloud, where the AI engine analyzes the data and generates a report—with no software installation required.

Korean sleep tech company HoneyNaps debuted SOMNUM Cloud at SLEEP 2025.

Years ago, I got into a heated exchange with an Italian dentist on social media. I cringe when I reflect on it now.

The dentist shared that he had a patient with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who was unable to use his CPAP machine. Fitting a custom oral appliance, the dentist reduced the man’s apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) from the 70s to only nine events per hour. Instead of applauding a good outcome and the improved quality of life the patient was experiencing, I complained, “Obstructive sleep apnea isn’t properly treated until the AHI is under five events per hour.”

The exasperated dentist calmly pointed out that the patient had abandoned his CPAP therapy and had left his OSA entirely untreated before he got his oral appliance.

“Isn’t an AHI of nine with an oral appliance better than an AHI in the 70s with no treatment?” he asked.

--Emma Cooksey

For those people who are leaving their OSA entirely untreated, we need treatment options—and a new attitude of pragmatism.

Blowing the conch shell, or shankh blowing, has been part of Indian culture for thousands of years. The researchers, led by Krishna K. Sharma, MD, from the Heart Care Centre and Research Institute in Jaipur, tested the hypothesis that engaging in respiratory muscle exercises through shankh blowing would result in reduced daytime sleepiness and other improved sleep-related outcomes for individuals with moderate OSA.

People who practiced blowing through a conch shell for six months experienced a reduction in symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep physicians outside America’s fee-for-service model use existing technologies to diagnose bruxism, narcolepsy, and much more without in-lab polysomnography. Even for sleep apnea testing, international colleagues move beyond AHI-focused diagnostics. Could this happen stateside?

While US sleep physicians remain constrained by reimbursement models, their international colleagues are leveraging type II home sleep technology to diagnose a comprehensive range of sleep disorders.
