What did warfare on Long Island Sound look like during the American Revolution? 🤔

Resident Historian Robert “Toby” Kissam takes us back 250 years in this month’s History Corner. 📜

Whaleboats became essential vessels for spying, raids, transportation, and military operations across the Sound. Among the local figures in this history was Henry Scudder of Crab Meadow, who risked his life gathering intelligence about Fort Slongo. His detailed map later helped American raiders successfully attack the fort in October 1781. 🗺️

Once the estate of Marshall Field III, Caumsett officially opened as a New York State Park in 1976. Today, nearly one million visitors each year enjoy its woodlands, meadows, historic buildings, and waterfront. 🌿
