This National Stamp Collecting Month take a page out of our (sticker) book: if you collect self-adhesive stamps and miss the versatility of storing them in an album or stockbook, try a reusable sticker book! Scales such as this made it easier for individuals to ensure they used the correct amount of postage for letters, instead of overestimating and wasting unnecessary stamps. The “Sav-A-Stamp” could weigh items up to four ounces; the attached clip held letters or small mail pieces to be weighed by the pendulum balance. Pictured here, the size of the “Sav-a-Stamp” scale can more easily understood when placed next to an envelope. The postage rate chart on this scale, which is part of our collection, places its manufacturing date between March 26, 1944 and September 30, 1946, when the U.S. airmail rate was eight cents per ounce. Nowadays, the majority of American post offices are equipped with Automated Postal Centers — self-service kiosks where patrons can weigh and rate letters, flats, and parcels up to 70 pounds.
