I used to over-complicate my fitness regime but finally settled on a formula that balances my stress hormones, improves my gut and thus my mind. HIIT, too much running and jumping just didn't do much for me.

Any other walking/yoga/pilates fanatic out there? Now my fitness regime simply comprises morning walks first thing daily, with pilates or some form of strength and/or resistance training once or twice a week, to make me feel energised and confident.

I also love and have been practicing for over a decade now, and incorporate that whenever I can.

Why did I even do a PhD? Have any of you also considered furthering your education but felt doubtful or possibly a waste of time?

I did learn a lot during my time as a PhD student, though it came with a lot of stress and self-doubt. As an academic I always loved science and the boundaries that could be pushed, especially in the field of neuropsychiatry, since the root causes of mood disorders like depression (my specialty) are still not clear.

However, I felt guilty being an academic and wanting the things that I really wanted– that is, pushing science beyond the scope of research defined by academic institutions like Oxford, the nicest and finest things in life, and having the freedom to do things like travel to France (that’s me in France, taken just recently!) whenever I wanted, and of course, financial freedom✨

Life is about finding the balance between health and pleasure. You have all the power in the world to find this balance as well.

Lucky, so lucky, to have the privilege of having this view every day while on a ski trip with my best friends in Chamonix, France, just a few weeks ago. Make time for your quality relationships and have quality travel experiences, throughout the year.

Fresh air, brisk weather, sauna, and pots of stretchy melting cheese. What a life😎

Daily morning routine for optimal physical and emotional health, from the perspective of a neuroscientist:

1. 6.30am rise. Early rise = more time to myself first thing, no phone for first couple hours in the day to start day in a proactive, creative state, instead of a reactive one.
2. Manifestation practice with journalling and affirmations. The neuroscience of manifestation is grounded in a few things, one of which is how the reticular activating system (RAS) in our brains actually helps bring more attention to elements in our life that align with goals that we repeat to ourselves regularly, thus helping us recognise opportunities that we might otherwise overlook if we did not focus our attention repeatedly on those goals and outcomes we want.
3. 45-60 minute walk outside, usually with a podcast. Morning sunlight to regulate circadian rhythm, and after years of experimenting with different exercise regimes, a fasted brisk walk (preferably in the zone 2 heart rate zone) is the one single thing that has done wonders for my mood, energy, gut health, and fat loss.
4. Shower and look my best. Respecting the way you look = respecting yourself, and people respect you only as much as you respect yourself. A core value of mine is always looking your best, whether at work or if you're grabbing stuff from the supermarket! Dress well, look elegant and polished, and watch that change your confidence and how others treat you.

My has changed a lot since my late teens; I used to be much stricter with the time I woke up and the way I exercisel. Perhaps the biggest change is the incorporation of manifestation, which neuroscience does well to justify anyway!

Grateful to have most of my mornings start like this. A daily walk first thing in the sun does wonders for your health– kick starts your circadian rhythm, and the blue light suppresses melatonin production to make you feel awake and alert.

Another cool thing: walking improves your gut health by reducing stress and inflammation, to create a favourable environment for a healthy and diverse gut microbiome (the population of bacteria in your gut).

Enjoying high quality, delicious food like the sushi set below (at one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London, Kikuchi) is part of my wellness routine. Yes, you can find that balance. Eating well is a meditative experience all on its own. I share more food and science adventures on my substack as well (https://alexcrumbs.substack.com/)!

Welcome! Excited to be on here to share my passion for the good life, all things gut-brain connection, beauty, health, and wellness.

A little introduction / about me:
1. I recently passed my doctorate in neuropsychiatry from the University of Oxford, and investigated the role of peripheral metabolites and lifestyle factors on the severity of major depressive disorder (depression). It's what spurred my passion to spread the word on how important gut health and lifestyle is for overall physical and mental health. It's seriously fascinating stuff.
2. I was raised by 2 incredibly hardworking people (mum and dad) and will always be grateful for them. I think about them a lot even though I don't get to see them much.
3. My hobbies include: reading (science and personal development in general), spa days, long walks or pilates, cooking, and exploring restaurants or cafes in London.
4. I derive a lot of joy from my coffee habit. I love the taste, smell, and process of getting it outside. I have (just one!) strong flat white every day.
5. From Singapore originally, but came to London for my undergraduate studies 8 years ago and haven't left since. I love love love this city.
6. Wellness and science aside, I'm such a princess. I love luxe hotels, massages, pilates, sushi, elegant style, and travel.
7. I have a lot to learn about topics I thought I knew a lot about: personal growth, wellness, cooking (specifically Asian food), love and relationships.
8. I love to bake so much that I published a cookbook many years ago, on breakfast and dessert recipes.
9. I have a slight fear of the sea and the things that lurk in the deepest depths of the ocean, but no fear of heights or flying.
10. I am really flexible and was called rubber band in middle school...
