“I just wanted to follow up…”

🚨 We’re retiring that one.

Not because it’s wrong—but because too many of us use softening language when what we really need is clarity.

You’re not “just” doing anything.

You’re following up on a proposal.
You’re asking for a decision.
You’re confirming a deadline.
You’re moving business forward.

Try this instead:

❌ “I just wanted to follow up and see if you had a chance to review my proposal.”

✅ “Following up on the proposal I sent Tuesday. Are you available to confirm next steps by Friday?”

See the difference?

Clear. Professional. Direct.
No attitude. No apology. No five-paragraph disclaimer before you get to the point.

Executive presence isn’t about sounding intimidating.

It’s about being clear enough that people know what you need from them.

You were never meant to carry everything alone.

Not the pressure.

Asking for help is not a loss of authority.
It is leadership maturity.

And speaking up before you break is not failure.
It is wisdom.

The strongest executives are not the ones who never struggle.
They are the ones who know when to pause, when to reach out, and when to let others support them too.

You don’t have to earn the right to be helped.

You already have it.

You Were Never Supposed to Carry Everything

One of the biggest lies professional women internalize is this:👇🏽

“If I don’t do it myself, it won’t be done properly.”

So you carry the team emotionally.
Carry the projects mentally.
Carry the pressure silently.

And people praise you for it.

But constant self-sacrifice is not leadership maturity.
Especially for Black women who learned early that being needed increased safety, value, and acceptance.

But leadership is not martyrdom‼️

Real power is:
•Delegation
•Discernment
•Strategic visibility
•Emotional regulation
•Decision-making without guilt

You’ve been calling it strategy.
Calling it emotional intelligence.
Calling it “reading the room.”

But if we’re truly being honest
it’s been about staying acceptable.

So you soften your voice.
Delay decisions.
Over-explain what doesn’t need permission.

And slowly, subtly…
you trade authority for approval.

Here’s the truth:

The more you prioritize being liked,
the harder it is for people to fully respect you.

Because respect is built on clarity.
On standards.
On decisions that won’t always make people comfortable.

And as a Black woman, that tension is even louder.
You’re expected to lead but not disrupt.
To speak but not challenge.
To show up but not take up too much space.

So you learn to balance.
To adjust.
To manage perception.

But leadership isn’t about being easy to accept.
It’s about being clear enough to be trusted.

You don’t need to be more likable.
You need to be more decisive about who you are in the room.

Because the moment you stop performing for approval
you start commanding respect!
