THENGERE TO HOST NATIONAL WOMEN'S LEAGUE GAME

Mzuzu University's ground (Santiago Thengere) is set to host National Women's League teams on Saturday, August 16, 2025, and Sunday, August 17, 2025.

According to Sports Director for Mzuzu University Student Representative Council (MUSREC), Thomas K. Movetie, the ground has been booked for National women's games and students are advised not to use it for playing games or studying during the specified dates. Movetie said students are welcome to watch both training sessions and games.

"On Saturday from 8 am to 12:30 pm the ground will be used for training sessions by the teams and on Sunday from 2:30 pm to 5 pm, Thengere will host the game." he said.

He further requested students not to use it for playing, discussion, or studying, but rather come in large numbers to watch and support the games, regardless of the exam period.

The Sports Director highlighted that hosting National Women's league games at Thengere is a development opportunity for MZUNI Women FC to learn from top level women's football.

Sunday's match features MK Academy vs. MDF Lioness, with notable player Asimenye Simwaka, a multi-award-winning athlete and Scorchers player, set to take the field.

FOOTBALL ON A BIG SCREEN: INSTALLATION OF A SMART TV PLASMA AT OFFSHADE.

The long-awaited installation of a Smart Plasma TV at the Offshade premises has finally been completed today, August 13, 2025.

The TV was donated to Mzuzu University students through MZUNI MCP Youth Wing by Mr. Vitumbiko Mumba a few months ago. It's setup has delayed due to security concerns, but with those issues now resolved, the big screen is ready to entertain.

Speaking about this development, Mzuzu University Student Council Representative (MUSREC), George Kamadya, stated that once operational, the Smart TV will allow students to enjoy live coverage of major football competitions, from the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League to La Liga and Serie A, all on a large, high quality screen right here on campus.

For football lovers at Mzuzu University, this is the moment to get excited the big leagues are coming home!

2nd ANNIVERSARY OF LATE 'YEAR0 AWIDA' CHANT ABSENSE

Today's afternoon will mark a second academic year of not chanting the might Year0 Awida Chant as first years sit for Communication 1201 since 24 May 2024 when it's head was cut off by Mzuzu University Management.

The chant, that went as a culture to empower and motivate first year students to strengthen their academic muscles by taking communication studies exam seriously , constituted dancing and singing around campus minutes prior to the communication exam starting time.

Unfortunately, 24 May 2024 saw the chant dying a natural death as a good number of students were called to disciplinary hearing on damage of school property and disturbing Standard 8 Malawi National Examination Board exam at St Augustine as the chant plunged into exam writing hours.

Flowers can wither and water may dry, Mzuzu University has indicated that culture can die.

To make sure that the aborted culture doesn't make an attempt to resurrect, the Dean of Students has warned all continuing students that members of staff will have cameras to capture those that have plans to revive the 'Year0 awida Chant'.

Do students miss the chant? Was 'Year0 awida, awidira COMM 1101/1201' really an exciting motivation speech?All in all, Rest in eternal peace, "Year0 awida chant".

GENEROSITY:MZUNI STAFF EXTEND HELPING HAND TO NEEDY STUDENTS

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) community has once again demonstrated the true spirit of compassion and unity, as members of staff recently came together to contribute funds to support students facing economic challenges.

The contributions, made through the Office of the Dean of Students Dr Agnes Hara, were used to purchase essential food and hygiene items, including soya pieces, rice, soap, salt and plastic bags for packaging.

These items were carefully packaged and distributed to the most deserving students, with each receiving: One large Protex soap, one Azam soap, four packets of soya pieces, a packet of salt, about ¾ kg of rice, about 1 kg of maize flour.
Additionally, 38 packets of soya pieces have been reserved for emergencies.

Speaking on the donation, Shekana Kasambala, Director of Social Welfare for FAFASA, expressed his appreciation to all staff members who contributed.

“This act of generosity has not only provided essential items but has also eased significant burdens for many students during this demanding examination period, we greatly appreciate", he stated.

Pictures of the packages distributed to students were shared as part of the report, serving as a reminder that acts of compassion no matter the size can leave lasting impacts on lives.

CONTINUING STUDENTS WARNED AGAINST DISTURBING COMM1201

The Dean of Students has issued a warning to all continuing students against disturbing first year students during tomorrow’s Communication skills (comm1201) exams.

“Tomorrow Level One students will be writing a Communication paper, Kindly warn all continuing students to behave on this day,” reads part of a communique from the dean of students that Esteemed press has seen.

This comes after previous examinations were disrupted by a mob that moved around examination halls intimidating first year students. During the fracas some students sustained injuries, lecturers harassed and examinations disturbed. However, disciplinary action was taken against offenders.

The Dean emphasized that such behavior will not be tolerated and urged all students to respect the rights of others to a peaceful examination environment.

15 MINUTES WERE ADDED TO LIBRARY TIME

Hours after Esteemed Press reported on students' frustration on Library's closure and opening hours today, Mzuzu University Students Representative Council President issued a statement to our news desk that the result of the delay to open the library will be an extension of time that will see it closed it at 4:45 PM hrs and it happened.

In his comment, George Kamadya promised that he will do his best that the library should close at midnight from tomorrow as it has been during similar times.

The library is one of the important tools as the battle between students and examinations start tomorrow. And as studying places become scarce during the grace week, the library becomes a remedy particulary during the night.

Perhaps, this is why the president is pledging to move up and down to make sure that the student community toils and sweat in intellectual peace. Last academic year, the library extended closing time from 10PM to 12 AM. Students are expecting the same this semester.

STUDENTS FRUSTRATED WITH LIBRARY OPENING HOURS AMIDST GRACE WEEK- MUSREC PRESIDENT UNCONSCIOUS

It is some good minutes after 1:00PM, the time Mzuzu University's Library opens on Sunday, today's afternoon but there were students still accumulating outside the Library trying to figure out when the Library would be opened, Esteemed Press has noted.

As the grace week ends, students want to utilise the library to the best of every minute, however at 13:30 PM as we went to the press, the Library was still closed.

Commenting on the matter as he found the gathered group, Student Union President George Kamadya has pledged that he will get it sorted and notify the reason for the delay before long. However, as we found him, he was also empty as the other students.

This incident, adds up to the outcry of closing the library before midnight. On the shoulders of the students Union right now, the student community seeks remedy in the library operations as exams have already approched.

LIZZIE'S BRIGHT LIGHT EXTINGUISHED: SEND-OFF UNDERWAY

The send-off and burial ceremony of Ms. Lizzie Thondoya began some hours ago at Emsizini, Mzimba, drawing together family, friends, colleagues, and fellow students to honor a life well lived. As a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the service was marked by adventists hymns, prayers, and tributes that reflected her faith and the values she lived by. Mourners spoke warmly of her kindness, dedication, and the lasting impact she made both professionally and personally.

Ms. Thondoya passed away at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Friday, 8th August 2025, at Mzuzu Central Hospital after a battle with liver cancer. At the time of her passing, she was pursuing a Master of Science in Forestry and Environmental Management at Mzuzu University. Her death is a great loss to the academic community and to the environmental and public health sectors she served with passion.

She first earned her Bachelor’s degree from Mzuzu University before returning last year to advance her studies in Health and Environmental Sciences.
Until her sudden death, she was working with Northern Region waterboard since 2010 as environmental officer.

Lizzie served as MUSREC director of gender in 2017 and it was her tenure that brought incinerators that you now see being mismanaged at Norah and other female hostels. Her environment conscious was seen through that landmark period poverty fight that brought sanity in menstrual pads management on campus. Lizzie won a MUSREC office when it was unfashionable for "sciences" students to persue campus politics.

May her soul continue Resting in Peace. We ode Lizzie for her life and Legacy.

THENGERE GROUND TO HOST SONDA FC VS MOYALE RESERVE

Sonda FC will play against Moyale Reserves today, Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Thengere Stadium, MZUNI.

Speaking to Esteemed Press, MUSREC sports director, Thomas K. Movetie said the communication about the ground has been delayed since the ground that was supposed to be used is currently being used by Malawi Defence Force soldiers (MDF) for military activities.

The teams will meet at Thengere ground in the Division 1 league, and the game will start at exactly 2:30pm.
