Journeyman (2025)
The Lat Brothers' entry in this year’s Puregold Cinepanalo Film Festival, Journeyman, is nothing short of remarkable. From the moment the film opens, it grabs your attention, pulling you into the life of its protagonist and keeping you invested in the story right up to the final credits. Journeyman is a film that truly deserves to be seen on the big screen, and it’s a cinematic experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
At the heart of the story is Angelo ‘El Maso’ Heresano, a struggling father who’s doing everything he can to support his family. His life revolves around dropping fights inside the ring for a bare minimum income. The film explores Angelo’s internal battle between his pride as a fighter and his dreams for a better life for his family. This emotional journey, full of setbacks and tough decisions, makes Journeyman a compelling watch. It’s a story of resilience and determination that you’ll want to follow until the very end.
The cinematography in Journeyman is visually stunning, with carefully composed shots that captivate and transport you into the world of the film. The fight scenes, in particular, are brilliantly choreographed — not over-the-top or overly stylized, but gritty and believable, adding to the film’s authenticity. I also loved how the film’s ending featured a commemorative scene for the late Jaclyn Jose, which I found both effective and satisfying.
The performances are equally impressive, with the cast delivering unforgettable portrayals of their characters. JC Santos brings Angelo ‘El Maso’ Heresano to life with raw emotion and conviction. His portrayal of the boxer is incredibly believable, with every gesture and facial expression conveying the pain, determination, and hope of his character. Jasmine Curtis-Smith complements Santos’ performance perfectly, adding depth and heart to the film. Jasmine has a remarkable ability to transform into any role, whether it’s a princess or a beggar, and she truly shines here. Raffy Tejada also deserves a special mention for his portrayal of the antagonist — effortlessly getting under your skin and creating a memorable villain. The colorful Ruby Ruiz and charming Darlyn Izabelle Salang round out the ensemble, adding their own unique charm to the film.
Journeyman is a powerful and inspiring story that showcases the strength of the human spirit, bolstered by standout performances from an incredibly talented cast. Its emotional depth and heartwarming elements resonate deeply, making it a must-watch. The film also leaves room for a potential sequel, and here’s hoping we’ll get to see more of this world in next year’s Puregold Cinepanalo Film Festival.
