the Chinese space-based solar power plant is planned to be positioned in geostationary orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometers (22,236 miles) above Earth. This specific orbit allows the solar power station to remain fixed over a particular location on the planet, enabling consistent energy transmission to ground-based receiving stations.

Why 36,000 km?
1. Geostationary Orbit Advantage: At this altitude, the station will orbit Earth at the same rotational speed as the planet, effectively “hovering” over one spot. This ensures a stable energy transmission point on the ground.
2. Continuous Solar Exposure: Geostationary orbit offers near-constant exposure to sunlight, avoiding Earth’s shadow for most of the year. This maximizes energy collection and makes the system highly efficient.

Transmission to Earth

Energy collected by the solar arrays in space will be converted into microwave beams or laser beams and sent to a receiving station on Earth. These beams are then converted back into electricity for distribution through the power grid.

This project is part of China’s ambitious plans to lead in renewable energy and space exploration, aiming to achieve operational capacity by the mid-2030s.
