This was a welcome surprise. 🐓 The Blue Rooster Irish Pub and Grill debuted nearly a year ago in the Jersey Village–Cypress/Cy-Fair area and offers classic pub fare such as fish and chips, burgers, wings and fried appetizers. 🍻
🍺 While I do enjoy stopping by a good neighborhood pub for a pint and a shot, it’s not often the food leaves a lasting impression worth doting upon.
🐟 The Irish lager–battered fish ’n’ chips are tender, flaky and golden, with shards of brittle, extra-crunchy bits — the result of cold batter hitting very hot oil, creating tiny bubbles and fissures that lock in crispness — that had us pecking at the basket like greedy roosters long after the fillets were devoured. 🍟 The crust was never greasy and, along with the fries, proved sturdy enough to stand up to malt vinegar without collapsing.
🥣 The “shepherd’s pie” is deeply savory and comforting and tastes like it was made in someone’s home kitchen. That said, it’s technically cottage pie, as it uses ground beef and includes melted cheese on top, making it more of an American pub–style version. Regardless, it’s good as a mug. 🥔 The mashed potato topping is fluffy inside and lightly crisped on top, with seasoning that’s dialed in and well balanced.
While neither dish is strictly traditional in ex*****on, we didn’t leave a crumb behind. Service was friendly and there’s a respectable lineup of Irish whiskey and beer. 🥃
🏈 The pub shows sports on big-screen TVs, often hosts live music and offers weekly specials such as free pool and $5 Irish pints on Tuesdays, plus Wednesday steak night with Bourbon Butter Steaks, featuring Wagyu ribeye, filet, secreto ibérico, blackened redfish and shrimp gnocchi. 🥩
