Here’s the bad news about civic renewal: It won’t come easily or fast. Toxic divides are much deeper and more serious than the outcome of a single election or the actions of one powerful person.

Now the good news. The barrier to entry is low. Everyone can make a difference. Participation in renewal requires neither money nor fame. It begins with all of us.

The theme of this year’s Braver Angels Convention was 1776-2026: A Pledge Renewed. In the last sentence of The Declaration of Independence agreed to here in Philadelphia nearly 250 years ago, the Founders pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to each other. Today, Braver Angels delegates agreed to sign this moving new pledge:
