The end of the worst is near! Dry slot is pushing in and evacuating the heaviest precipitation to the northeast. It is ending right now in Jackson, and will end for the entire area over the next several hours. Light precip may linger.

Heaviest icing is starting to develop over the Jackson area and will spread northeast over the next several hours.

PLEASE SHARE TO SPREAD THE WORD—

New data is starting to hone in on the area that is most likely to see severe impacts from this ice storm. Below I’ve circled the area that I think will see the most severe impacts. Localized areas may see over half an inch of ice accretion. At over a half an inch ice can have catastrophic impacts to power grids, and travel conditions. The best thing you can do is stay home Wednesday into Thursday morning if at all possible. If you must travel, be advised that it may not be possible in some cases. Stay tuned!

ICE STORM LIKELY WED 2/22—

Latest hi resolution data is showing significant icing across much of our viewing area. As of now it looks like the very heaviest ice accretion will be in the Waterford Township/Macomb Township area down to Jackson/Ann Arbor. The heaviest ice accretion currently looks like it will stay west and north of downtown Detroit. Even if you’re not in the heaviest ice bullseye, travel will still be hazardous. Stay tuned for the latest!

As you can see, models are continuing to show potentially significant I’ve accumulations in parts of eastern Michigan. Some localized areas may see upwards of .50-.75” which could cause extremely hazardous driving conditions as well as power outages. Falling tree limbs will be hazardous to anyone parked under a tree or standing under a tree. I fully expect the National Weather Service to upgrade parts of the area to an ice storm warning fairly soon. Stay tuned for the latest.

UPDATE ON WEDNESDAY’S POTENTIAL ICE STORM—

New hi resolution data is shifting the dangerous freezing rain Wednesday a bit north on the latest runs which is taking downtown Detroit out of the worst of the event as of now. The Flint area appears to now be in the bullseye and especially along the I-69 corridor. The further north in Detroit, the higher the expected totals. Even if you’re not in the worst shadings on this map, the ice will still cause major problems including power outages, falling tree limbs, and extremely hazardous travel Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.
