A pending state law that would protect race tracks from some nuisance complaints recently passed the Ohio House.

If passed, the bill would create a legal defense for racing facilities against certain claims — like noise, traffic or lighting — and applies to property owners who purchased or developed property near race tracks after the racing facility's initial opening: https://tinyurl.com/y9a37ywa

Circa 1985, maybe 86. I was around the Cleveland street racing scene with a camera in my hands, not to define it, only to document a small piece of it through my own lens. This is not the story of the entire scene. It is only the story behind this image and how it came to exist.

Over the years I have heard someone else believed he shot this photo because he possessed a print. The reality is simpler than the rumors. I took the photograph and still own copyright as the shooter. I shot these images for Frank and Glenny! Back then prints moved around between friends, often without much thought about where they would end up years later.

Frank was one of the people in that circle. Some called him Frank, others Benny or Bennicuni, and I am sure I never got the spelling right. I always knew him as Frank. Our paths crossed through mutual friendships, including Neal Vance, a name that carries real weight for anyone who understands that era. The names are not meant as badges or proof of belonging, only as context for how I found myself standing where I did when this shutter clicked.

The car in this image was a legitimate 10 second street machine at a time when NHRA Pro Stocks were only just pushing into the mid 8 second range. That alone tells you something about the atmosphere of those nights. My role was simple. I showed up with a camera, usually with a side mounted Sunpak 522 hanging off it, trying to freeze moments that most people assumed would never be seen outside that circle. There was always a quiet tension when a camera appeared around illegal racing, but friendships meant prints were shared, traded, and passed along without much ceremony.

Years later, Glenny helped reconnect me with this photo, which I scanned and restored. Looking back, I regret giving away the negatives so freely. At the time it felt normal. Today it feels like handing away pieces of history.

To me, and to many who remember those nights, this image is not about credit or ownership battles. It is simply a glimpse into Cleveland street racing in the mid 80s as it existed in real time, seen through one photographer’s perspective. # N.V.Racing

Fast Enuff Media starts today. And this Silver New Edge is exactly why.

Northcoast Grudge is evolving into Fast Enuff Media. The direction is shifting into something more journalistic, more feature driven, and more honest to the culture. Whether I am directly involved with the cars or straight up fanboying over somebody else’s bad ass hot rod, whether it is at the track or on the street, this page is going to be about the hobby, the people, and the culture that keeps all of us coming back.

And that brings me to this story.

Fate is a funny, peculiar notion.

My brother from a different mother has been listening to me spit in his ear for over a year about bang for the buck entry into performance. Having owned a 94 Vette, he had certain assumptions, incorrectly I might add, about what fast and capable really means. But hey, you like what you like until you don’t.

Over time he started recognizing certain things about my 04 GT. We bantered. We debated. And yes, I talked my s**t, because talking s**t and smack between brothers is an artform, right. Not to dominate, but because I have driven his Vette and I live behind the wheel of my 04 GT. I said it loud and proud. My 04 GT was faster in a straight line and, with tubular suspension and coilovers, a machine in the corners too. Boast and bravado backed by ET slips.

Fast forward to the media I am posting. I spent 16000 bucks of his money through persuasion and persistence on what I believe is the right replacement for that Vette.

So yeah, this is not only me bullying him. This is me enjoying the resurrection of a deprived man’s soul. And I would do that s**t again. You hear me.

Enter the Silver Bullet. Not a Bullitt Mustang, but a bullet all the same. Quite possibly the most honest New Edge I have been around. 25000 OE miles. Meticulously clean. Bought, yes, but clearly built by a car guy who poured passion, skill, and decision making into every inch of it. This is the kind of car you rarely see anymore, built with intent instead of trend.

Is it the fastest New Edge. Nope. Does it need to be. Absolutely not. Can a new owner be proud of it sitting in their garage. Damn right. And if someone wants to shun a car because of some bought not built ideology, that just proves we probably were not going to be friends anyway. I said what I said. It is ok to be slow, but stupid despite intelligence is a whole different rant.

Let’s talk about the subtle flex. Extended rear studs, and yeah that is a flex because we know there are axles behind it. 30 spline setup, 4.10 gears, adjustable upper control arms, Team Z tubular uppers and lowers, torque boxes reinforced. That is not random parts throwing. That is prethought. That is someone saying if I am here already I might as well make it bulletproof.

And the underside of the car. Just as clean as the factory silver topside. Truly spotless. The Team Z treatment did not stop at the rear either. Full Team Z K member up front with coilovers, poly bushings throughout, sitting on SVE wheels, and according to the seller all of it has less than 1000 miles on it.

Now I can talk merit and value all day. Is 16000 too much for a 99 New Edge. Most times, yes. But sometimes you land on a deal where nobody is getting screwed and you recognize that nobody builds a car like this planning to let it go. I have not talked to Brian about his reasons, but you could see it in his face. If money were not a factor he probably would have kept this car and still built that bad ass 01 he is knee deep into. Whatever the reason, I am glad he did.

Because Kevo now owns a straight up head turner.

And then there is the engine. This thing does not idle, it lope chops. Comp Stage 4 cam doing its thing, big valve springs and retainers, flycut pistons, Victor Jr intake with an MHS plenum and throttle body. Catch can setup because who does not delete the EGR s**t the proper way. BBK long tubes feeding a good X pipe and Borla Attack out back. The exhaust note is loud, sharp, and it barks every time you breathe on it. It is not pretending to be a race car. It is not chasing internet clout. It is exactly what a New Edge hotrod should be.

A loud, honest, fun little hotrod.

So… we smoked the clutch. Well, “mirror-finished it” is probably more accurate.

I can't even blame this one on cheap parts — the McLeod clutch did exactly what it was designed to do: perform slightly better than stock. But those Kenda KR20s? They're weird. Cheap, yes. Absolutely incredible in the rain? Shockingly so. But the stuff that used to be fun on a set of Nitto 555s? Yeah… that same fun turned into absolute driveline carnage on these budget tars.

While editing this video, it finally hit me: the clutch has been hurt for a while. Our first pass at Kunle was on the same tuneup that ran a 13.91 at Dragway 42 — but this time it fell flat to a 14.40 at 92 MPH. I figured maybe I was too rich and didn’t have enough (spelled enuff) timing in the upper curve. So I pulled about 10% of fuel from 3300 RPM across the 50–100 kPa range up to 6500, then reshaped the spark table — added 4° at 4500/100kPa to bring it up to 26°, and 32° at 45kPa. I blended that down to 20° at 6500/100kPa and smoothed it all in.

The car came back with a 14.20 @ 99.89 MPH and a 2.06 60-foot — which, if we’d run that at 42, probably would’ve been a 13.80 or maybe even a 13.70. But I think the clutch was still slipping hard and cost us at least 7 MPH and four-tenths. Of course… that’s called bench racing. And the whole point of going to the track is to find out how slow you really are and come up with the best possible excuse for it.

Hopefully the new clutch goes in this week, and we’re back at the track in two. Then it’s no more talking s**t — it’s either put up or look like a dumb hillbilly… which, honestly, I already resemble.

Second pass I added 3 degrees of timing across the midrange from 40 mph to 100 kph and added 5 percent more fuel in the same range I picked up a 10th and 7 mph! But this air the car not fast enuff is just slow!
