So… we smoked the clutch. Well, “mirror-finished it” is probably more accurate.
I can't even blame this one on cheap parts — the McLeod clutch did exactly what it was designed to do: perform slightly better than stock. But those Kenda KR20s? They're weird. Cheap, yes. Absolutely incredible in the rain? Shockingly so. But the stuff that used to be fun on a set of Nitto 555s? Yeah… that same fun turned into absolute driveline carnage on these budget tars.
While editing this video, it finally hit me: the clutch has been hurt for a while. Our first pass at Kunle was on the same tuneup that ran a 13.91 at Dragway 42 — but this time it fell flat to a 14.40 at 92 MPH. I figured maybe I was too rich and didn’t have enough (spelled enuff) timing in the upper curve. So I pulled about 10% of fuel from 3300 RPM across the 50–100 kPa range up to 6500, then reshaped the spark table — added 4° at 4500/100kPa to bring it up to 26°, and 32° at 45kPa. I blended that down to 20° at 6500/100kPa and smoothed it all in.
The car came back with a 14.20 @ 99.89 MPH and a 2.06 60-foot — which, if we’d run that at 42, probably would’ve been a 13.80 or maybe even a 13.70. But I think the clutch was still slipping hard and cost us at least 7 MPH and four-tenths. Of course… that’s called bench racing. And the whole point of going to the track is to find out how slow you really are and come up with the best possible excuse for it.
Hopefully the new clutch goes in this week, and we’re back at the track in two. Then it’s no more talking s**t — it’s either put up or look like a dumb hillbilly… which, honestly, I already resemble.
