Wise words from a treasured British comedian. For those of us who like to think out loud and work collaboratively, the wet towel that many leaders throw on creative problem solving is quite discouraging. Far too many leaders approach problem solving competitively or with pre-conceived notions of what the answers are. Neither approach leads to innovation.

Just a brief article contemplating life, finitude, futility, and inevitability. It'll take you less than a minute to read but hopefully a lifetime to consider.

NOTE: The title is "Sometimes things in life are simply B #". I have no idea why the thumbnail below titled it "0 Comments." 🙂

I was going over the fretboard on the bass with my 11-year-old son today, and when we got to the half step between B and C, I had to explain to him that unlike most other half steps between natural notes, B does not have a sharp ( #). Naturally (though surprisingly in my morning stupor), his immediat...

I was promoted to Colonel a couple months ago, but we finally conducted the official promotion ceremony today. It was a wonderful and humbling experience. Many thanks to Chaplain (Brigadier General) Charles M. Causey for hosting my ceremony. It was truly a day to remember!

In a Friday afternoon ceremony held within the Chaplains Museum, located in the terrace level of Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell Library, U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Mark A. Tinsley was promoted to the rank of colonel, with his family...

LTC (Ret.) Al Stuhlmiller was my Professor of Military Science at James Madison University when I commissioned into the Army in 1998. LTC Stuhlmiller has been one of the most influential men in my life, and I consider the lessons he taught me to be some of my most valuable. He possesses what I call the four critical S's of life success: scholarly intellect, savvy, service orientation (i.e., servanthood), and single-minded determination. For these reasons, he has been a successful Soldier, military officer, teacher, coach, community leader, and child of God. Earlier this year, I nominated LTC Stuhlmiller to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky to receive the coveted Kentucky Colonel commission. This past Sunday, I was able to present LTC Stuhlmiller with his commission on behalf of the Governor. What an honor for an honorable man.

As my friends know, I was on faculty at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, from 2008 to 2017, during which time I rose through the ranks to become Dean of the College of General Studies. However, in early 2017, I decided that it was time to leave Liberty University and pursue a career in higher education elsewhere. Little did I know that securing subsequent employment at a college or university would be so difficult. For roughly five years, I applied to various institutions only to be passed over each time. I had come to the conclusion that a higher-ed job was not in the cards when I was graciously offered a full-time teaching position in earth science/geology at Central Virginia Community College in 2022. I jumped at the opportunity and poured myself into the job, immediately becoming involved in several academic writing projects, faculty committees, and campus life. For two years, I have proudly served CVCC as a teacher and student advocate. However, in a surprising turn of events, I recently found myself presented with the opportunity to apply for the position of Associate Vice Present (AVP) of Arts and Sciences at CVCC, and the college announced today that I was selected for the position. I am blown away and humbled by this opportunity. It has been over seven years since I last occupied a leadership role in higher education, but I am looking forward to the challenges and rewards of leading once again. Thanks to all my friends for your encouragement and support along the way. It is not taken for granted.

I had the pleasure this morning of presenting Robert Cassidy with his Kentucky Colonel commission from the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear. The Kentucky Colonel commission recognizes deserving people for their philanthropy and service to Commonwealth and nation. Robert has served the people of Kentucky through his recent missions work with Laurel Mission in Big Laurel, KY, and the indigenous people of Honduras since 2016 through Mission of Harmony, an international missions organization founded by Robert and his late wife, Fonda. The Kentucky Colonel commission is the highest award bestowed by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient. Robert has a love for people eclipsed only by his humility and gentle spirit. Would that more served our Lord as Robert does!

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools

I've been tryin' to get down
To the heart of the matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it's about
Forgiveness
