Korean medical team flies to Philippines, saves 20-year-old man with living liver transplant

Mr. Franz Aren Babao Reyes, 23, has suffered for four years from primary sclerosing cholangitis. Recently, he was admitted to the ICU for sepsis. Due to chronic biliary inflammation, his liver function deteriorated and he needed a liver transplant.

Professors Ahn Cheol-soo and Kim Sang-hoon of the Department of Liver Transplantation and Biliary Surgery at Seoul Asan Medical Center performed the transplant with the patient's mother, Maria Lorena Mendoza Babao, as the living donor. The mother was discharged five days after the transplant, while her son is scheduled by the end of the week.

In the Philippines, the rate of organ donation is one per a million people. The liver transplant survival rate also falls below the international average. Makati Medical Center, which has no experience in living donor liver transplantation, requested medical staff exchange and liver transplantation training from Seoul Asan Medical Center, and the two hospitals signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for medical exchange in 2023.

Seoul Asan Medical Center has performed 7,563 living donor liver transplants so far, and in May of this year, it achieved 9,000 liver transplants, including brain-dead donor liver transplants, setting the world record for the most liver transplants by a single medical institution.

Share ko lang. Kahapon nag biyahe ako ng halos 3 oras round trip para kumain ng halo-halo. Nagpupunta ako ng Alily's Kitchen mula pa 2023 noong nagbukas siya ng tindahan niya. Pero nauna kong natikman ang luto niya ng magdala si Carina Park ng palabok para sa party.

Lumaki ako sa Pampanga at maarte ako sa palabok dahil maraming masarap na palabok sa Angeles - Nelson's, Suzie's, Mr. Frosty, Coolspot, atbp.

Mula noon ay nago-order na ako ng palabok kay Alily. Anyway, yung halo-halo na served nya kahapon ay sobrang sarap. Iba pa siya sa halo-halo na gawa nya noong isang taon. Ngayon sobrang sarap talaga na nasabihan ko siya na dapat taasan nya presyo 😂🤣. Kahit 30k won magbibyahe ako mula Seoul. Pero 14k nga pala halo-halo at sobrang sulit! Ang laki ng leche flan, ube, at may melon ice cream pa. Halo-halo overload talaga. At oo naubos ko kasi malakas talaga ako kumain at kahit na may palabok, bihon, pandesal, at lumpia pa na kinain bago ang halo-halo.

Nag-take home ako ng pancit bihon, pancit palabok, siomai, siopao, at lumpia. At kasama ng halo-halo, 52k won lang binayaran ko. Sobrang sulit ang biyahe, ang daming serving at sarap ng luto niya.

Maliit lang ang pwesto ni Alily De Ocampo Choi so medyo pasensya pero sulit talaga. Habang naghihintay ng pagkain ay nanood din kami ng TV at bumalik sa amin ang panahon noong mga teenager kami sa Pilipinas.

A VIETNAMESE WORKER IN HIS 20S DIED AT CONSTRUCTION SITE

According to the Gyeongbuk Fire Department and the Gumi Police Station on the 8th, at 5:24 p.m. the previous day, a colleague found a foreign worker, Mr. A, lying on his back at an apartment construction site in Shandong-eup, Gumi, and reported it.

Mr. A was already dead and had a body temperature of 40.2 degrees. At that time, the daytime temperature in Gumi was 37.2 degrees Celsius.

It was understood that Mr. A, who went to work for the first time that day, said to his colleagues before leaving work, "I'm going to go to the bathroom," and left.

The police and health authorities suspect that the cause of death was heat illness based on the fact that Mr. A's body temperature was about 40 degrees Celsius at the time of discovery.

The police plan to conduct an autopsy on the 9th to investigate the exact cause of A's death.

In addition, it is planned to check whether Mr. A suffered from an underlying disease through an acquaintance in Korea.

The Gumi District Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor plans to investigate whether the business operator complied with safety measures related to heat illness.

KOREAN CITIZENS AND SOME FOREIGN RESIDENTS TO RECEIVE AT LEAST 150,000 WON FROM THE GOVERNMENT LATER THIS MONTH

The Korean government will begin providing vouchers to Korean citizens and some foreign residents starting July 21.

FIRST CONSUMPTION SUPPORT PROJECT
The basic amount per person is 150,000 won,
300,000 won for the second lowest class and single parents, and
400,000 won for the basic livelihood recipients.

An additional 30,000 won will be paid to residents in non-metropolitan areas, excluding Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, and 50,000 won will be paid to residents in rural areas with reduced population.

SECOND CONSUMPTION SUPPORT PROJECT
This will begin in September and will pay 90% of the people eligible based on health insurance premiums and pay 100,000 won each.

FAQ:
Population decreased areas that will get additional 50,000 won are 84 cities and counties in rural areas where the population of rural areas decreases.

From July 14, mobile apps such as Naver, Kakaotalk, and Toss, request for the notification service will be available.

Can foreigners apply for the consumption coupons?
- Foreigners listed on the resident registration card which includes at least one Korean and subscribes to the same health insurance.
- F-5, F-4, and F-2-4 who pays into the NHIS
