✨ East Clarendon Middle School’s 2025 Teacher of the Year is Hannah Wilder!

A Manning native, Wilder teaches sixth-grade science and social studies. She chose middle level education because those years shape who students become.

“In my classroom, we appreciate curiosity … I want my kids to wonder about the whys and the hows of the world,” she says.

Her day is built around inquiry: quick “science starters” to spark thinking, hands-on labs (yes, even slime for safety and the scientific method), and microscope work that turns questions into understanding.

Outside the classroom, Hannah and her husband, David, are celebrating big news—their first child, a baby boy due Dec. 4. 💙

Judge vacates convictions — Michael Pearson walks free after 15 years

Circuit Judge Robert E. Hood on Thursday vacated Michael Pearson’s convictions and granted a new trial, setting him free on bond after 15 years behind bars.

Pearson, represented by attorneys Chris Mumma of the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence and James Babb of Columbia, embraced his family as he left the courtroom.

“Innocent is a beautiful word with a beautiful meaning, and it needs to be recognized when it’s there,” Mumma told the court.

📸 Photos capture Pearson in the courtroom, reuniting with family, and speaking outside the Clarendon County Courthouse.

✨ Walker Gamble Elementary’s 2025 Teacher of the Year is Helyn “Lyn” Sullivan!

Sullivan’s path to teaching wasn’t traditional—she first built a career in retail before realizing, as a new mother, that her heart belonged at home and in the classroom.

“To be recognized by people I’m in awe of every day is incredible,” Sullivan said. “I still don’t always feel worthy, but it’s something I’ll remember forever.”

Today, she teaches third grade ELA and social studies at Walker Gamble, where her structured but fun classroom reflects the love she pours into her students. Outside of school, she also leads the East Clarendon varsity cheer team, giving her another way to connect with students and families.

📸 Read more about Sullivan’s journey, her teaching style, and her deep ties to the community in this week’s Teacher of the Year feature. Link in the comments.

Clarendon County 4-H youth are earning recognition on the state and national stage.

Both the junior and senior Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) teams claimed first place in the South Carolina competition this spring. The senior team went on to represent the state at the National Invitational in Tennessee, where they placed fifth in the nation.

Once in the field at Nationals, the team was completely on their own — no coach, no technology, and just a few hours to develop a full wildlife management plan. Volunteer coach Tina Proffit said the placement reflects months of preparation. “It was totally whatever they knew at the time, whatever they were prepared for,” she said. “They really had to rely on their knowledge.”

From mastering wildlife identification to designing habitat management strategies, the students proved their skills, teamwork, and commitment to conservation.

📸 See highlights from their journey in the photos below.
