In 1885, eight people were murdered in Austin, Texas.
The killer was never caught.
But at nearly every crime scene, investigators found something pressed into the blood and the mud and the pine floorboards…barefoot prints.
Walking. Never running. A man completely at
ease with what he had just done.
And in every print of the right foot…a void. Where the smallest toe should have been.
Nothing.
Then in February 1886, a 19-year-old man named Nathan Elgin was shot by police while attacking a woman in an Austin saloon.
An autopsy revealed something extraordinary.
He was missing the pinky toe on his right foot.
The murders stopped.
The average number of days between each attack throughout the entire year of terror was 47 days. The number of days between
the last murder on Christmas Eve 1885 and the night Nathan Elgin was shot while attacking a woman?
47 days.
Three years later, Jack the Ripper began killing in London. Newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic immediately asked the question out loud…was it the same man?
