For two million years, the river has slowly carved its way through limestone, slicing through mountains like a scalpel. The result is a landscape of towering canyon cathedrals — Santa Elena, Boquillas, and Closed Canyon.

Long before deserts and mountains, a shallow sea ruled this land.

For nearly 80 million years, the Big Bend region was submerged beneath ocean waters. Layer by layer, salt, shells, and sediment compressed into the limestone that now towers across the landscape.

The cliffs, canyons, and ridges we see today are the remnants of that ancient world.

Tectonic forces compressed North America, raising the earth from an ancient sea while fractures in the crust unleashed deep volcanic fires from the mantle. What followed was a violent transformation of water, stone, and flame that forged the raw foundations of the Big Bend.
