Today is DNA day!! It is being celebrated by announcing the winners of the 2020 DNA Day essay contest. This essay contest for K-12 students is held every year by the American Society of Human Genetics, the premier international organization for human geneticists. For the past five years, I've participated as a judge in this contest. I see my participation not only as important national and international service, but also as a way to keep up my knowledge as a geneticist while also exercising my "writing muscles" as a professor who teaches both science journalism and introductory reporting. I have one foot in science and one foot in journalism. Both fields are important to democracy, humanity and the world.

Congratulations to our 2019 essay winners! This year’s topic addressed disclosing a Huntington's disease diagnosis to a family member.
