I'm not ashamed to admit I finally broke down and listened to the wisdom of Carla Barron Wallace and I am better off for it. What was my issue and what was this advice that would cause me to shout from the metaphorical rooftops that my wife is a genius? Here's a clue:

Why are Carla Barron Wallace and I so happy? It wasn't that corn dog and bushel of fries I ate, I can tell you that. It's Saturday and prime time for projects! New South Essays poses the question "Is it really a project or are you just piddlin'?" I make the case that "projects" are the new "piddlin'." See if you agree:

I spent Labor Day weekend with my folks in Lake Wales, Fla., and tried my best to complete as many projects as I could in three days. I don’t get down there as often as I should, and I mean no disr…

Last year about this time, I offered New South Essays readers definitive modalities for designating the beginning of fall. If you forgot or if you so enjoyed it or if you want to know what "modalities" means, please read and share a great essay from the archives on the beginning of fall. Be careful sipping your pumpkin spice lattes while walking through spiderwebs...

Welcome to fall… I think. Or maybe it was three weeks ago. Who knows. For the past few years we’ve been hearing a lot about science and what it says or doesn’t say. If you follow science, it says t…

I'm what you might call a "johnny-come-lately" to soccer, and Brian Greer and Bob Perkins have been more than patient with my journey toward understanding and appreciating the "beautiful game." This week's all new, New South Essay explains how I am slowly learning to follow a new game, despite being set in my ways, as is the case with old dogs... https://newsouthessays.com/2024/08/24/football-season/

I've been seeing and enjoying all y'all's first day of school photos. Read the dramatic epiphany I've experienced about back-to-school season in this week's all-new New South Essay. Carla Barron Wallace and I only have maybe seven years left of this... or do we?
