In Canada, July 28 has been officially recognized as the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval. This designation reflects the day when, in 1755, the colonial council of Nova Scotia made the shameful and tragic decision to deport the Acadian population from its territory. As a recent book indicates, 17,000 people were affected by this decision, which created a diasporic Acadia stretching on both sides of the Atlantic.

Congratulations to the Madawaska Historical Society for another successful celebration of Maine Acadian Day, this weekend. This is a can't-miss annual event for residents of the St. John Valley and visitors hoping to learn more about the unique heritage of the region. The historical society is home to the Tante Blanche Museum, several historic buildings, and the Acadian Cross and Landing Site.

Below we see Shawn Francis, cultural coordinator of the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation, leading a smudging ceremony and commemorating the meeting of Acadians and Wəlastəkwewiyik in our region in 1785.
