Yong Yello - Bennie & de banaliteit van het bestaan

With “Marcel & het magnetisme van de goot”, Yong Yello already made one of the best albums from Belgium ever on my opinion.

The advance singles were ok at first but grew and grew and are still growing. High expectations and already a great first spin.

Mayhem - Chimera

Here’s a Mayhem album I don’t listen to much. Right now I’m wondering why. Considering I tend to look at De Mysteriis as the best black metal album ever, it’s understandable this one is overshadowed by it’s illustrious predecessor.

Chimera deals with a colder, slightly industrial sound and feel aching a bit towards Abigor’s later albums (Fractal Possession and onwards). Maniac is my least favourite Mayhem vocalist but probably the best fit for this album with his dry, cold, rasping vocals.

So, while very different from De Mysteriis, this is a more than decent album. Comparing the two is useless.

Portal - Avow

Unique death metal. Suffocating with a psychedelic quality to it.

They’ll embark on a European tour this very month. As I’ve never seen them, I’ll head to the (newly located) Magasin 4 in Brussels. After seeing Antediluvian last week, I’m very curious to see what Portal will be like on stage.

Malokarpatan - Krupinské ohne

A great mix of Master’s Hammer worship, progrock and Slovakian folk (presumably as I’m not very well versed in it 😊).

Less “dirty” as their previous albums but at least equally good.

Krallice - Porous Resonance Abyss

(You hear music from Crystalline Exhaustion as PRA isn’t available to add here)

Another great album by Krallice. Lots of analog synths, lots of atmosphere yet, as always, very technical. Luckily the technicality isn’t a purpose but serves the songs. Adventurous, spacey and epic black metal!

Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses

We had a CD rental shop in the village where even national TV came to get music. Remember this was before digital music. No need to say they had a lot of music.

So as a kid, I rented CD’s and taped them (they sold empty cassettes). I remember renting Bloody Kisses while it was still in the “new arrivals” section which means I’ve been listening to this album for over 30 years now.

Truth be told, this album is only growing on me for the last 8 years or so. No idea why, I never had it on high rotation but listened to it regularly since I got it.

I only saw them live once and was actually too drunk to really remember anything, which I regret now. They also played on the very first edition of Graspop but the marquee was packed and there was no getting in.

The second album by this experimental and psychedelic drum-synth-vocals duo. It’s eerie, it’s heavy, it’s enchanting.

Booked them to open for Alkerdeel at the release show for Lede.

Willie Darktrousers & De Splinters - Glibberburen

One of the weirdest records BDC released. An autotune hiphop artist that got into Darkthrone and Swans and released an album with a band. The Swans influence becomes clear in the last song. The album has been recorded with no kick and an acoustic guitar.

A weird one. Some keywords are psychedelic, pop, balkan, dreamy, postrock, blastbeats and, well, weird.

You have to listen for yourself.
