Chicago Imagist artist donated his home and art collection to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago shortly before his death in 1996. For over 25 years, it served as a magical and one-of-a-kind resource in the city for students, artists, and visitors from around the world.

Pentimenti filmed and worked extensively in the archives of the Roger Brown Study Collection (RBSC) to tell Brown’s story, alongside his friends and colleagues, in our 2014 film Hairy Who & the .

This video celebrates the enigmatic mix that was found at RBSC — more than 2,000 artworks by Chicago Imagists and non-mainstream artists, folk and indigenous art, objects from material and popular culture, costumes, textiles, furniture, travel souvenirs, and more.

Regrettably, the SAIC sold the contents of the Study Collection with little outside input in late 2023.

Now, over the objections of many, the School is selling the building. And with no City of Chicago landmarking in place, it could be demolished by any future owner.

As covered recently in the Tribune, Crain’s, and Blockclub Chicago, a coalition of alumni, faculty, students, and members of the broader community are circulating a petition, already over 500 signatures, asking:

“We implore SAIC to reconsider this sale. This property has local, national, and international significance to a broad community of artists, art historians, art lovers, preservationists, architects, and just regular folks for whom it has provided literally life-changing opportunities for inspiration and education. SAIC owes its protection to that community, their own current and future students and faculty, and to the Estate of Roger Brown.”

Find the petition linked in our bio to take action.

2025 Spotlight (4/4 - )

Amber Nolan — “Tourist Town”

Amber Nolan is a screenwriter and filmmaker from Key West, Florida where she lives aboard a sailboat. The daily struggles of boat life served as the inspiration behind her first short screenplay, “Staying Afloat,” which was produced by Red Baron Films in 2023. Amber focuses on countercultures, people living on the fringe, and her home state of Florida.

“Tourist Town,” is an animated short film inspired by life in the Florida Keys, a longtime hub for creatives. In the film, a group of island misfits and artists are fed up with the tourists. When developers plan to demolish their local bar as part of an expansion project, the locals concoct a harebrained plan to blow up the island’s only bridge, but in doing so, they maroon themselves with the very tourists they resent! Tempers rise as resources dwindle. The comedic film aims to draw attention to the problem of overtourism and how it affects small communities.

2025 Spotlight (3/4 - .antoine)

Alexandra Antoine — “Quilting Memories of Aline”

Alexandra Antoine is an interdisciplinary visual artist and cultural apprentice based in Chicago, IL. Her work acknowledges the influences of her Haitian culture and interest in portraiture, food, traveling, farming and the deep wisdom involved in traditional artistic practices of the Afrikan diaspora. She honors her ancestors always and is currently growing food in several community gardens on the West side of Chicago.

Using the tradition of oral stories and cultural cuisine, “Quilting Memories of Aline” documents the memories of the filmmaker’s maternal grandmother as told through the lens of her elders. In a family and culture where intimate stories are not always openly shared, food serves as a catalyst for understanding the matriarch of a family.

2025 Spotlight (2/4 - )

Maya Horton — “My Mother is an Artist”

Maya Horton is a documentary filmmaker and impact producer whose work centers marginalized voices and systems change. She serves on the City of Chicago’s Reparations Task Force and is the director of “My Mother is an Artist,” a film exploring outsider art, trauma, and visibility. Maya also leads community engagement at PBS affiliate WTTW, where she produces public programming that bridges storytelling with civic action.

“My Mother is an Artist” is an intimate portrait of Lajuana Lampkins, a fiercely creative but overlooked artist navigating life on the margins of the art world and society. Through her story, the film examines who gets to be seen, who gets to create, and ultimately — who gets justice. It challenges dominant narratives around legitimacy, labor, and care, centering art as both survival and resistance.

2025 Spotlight (1/4 - , )

Niya Leigh — “Nexus”

Niya Leigh is a filmmaker and multimedia artist based in New York City. She is the writer and director of the psychological sci-fi short film “Nexus.” Niya aims to create projects with a surrealist edge, integrating the untold stories of the BIPOC community into new mediums. Her films excavate the world through the lens of these unheard voices, satirizing cultural landscapes from both the past and present. As a recent graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Niya has built a community of collaborators across various disciplines to tell stories.

Inspired by the work of Marina Abramović and Alexander McQueen, “Nexus” tells the story of Violet, who uncovers her photographer boyfriend Issak’s infidelity with his new muse, Celeste, causing her world to crumble. Devastated and consumed by jealousy, Violet becomes fixated on Celeste, embarking on a dark journey of obsession. Through the lens of social media, which is personified as “the Void,” Violet interacts with Celeste’s meticulously curated life, stalking her every move and striving to emulate her beauty.
