Welcome to Vancouver, where the potholes are permanent, but at least we’re getting seven World Cup games for the low, low price of up to $624 million.
• The province says hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver could cost between $532M and $624M, up from April’s already-hefty estimate.
• The net cost? Between $100M and $145M, depending on how bad inflation, emergency planning, and general chaos get.
• About 350,000 fans are expected to flood BC Place next June and July.
• The feds are kicking in $166M, and a 2.5% tax on short-term rentals (read: your Airbnb trip to Kelowna) will help cover the tab.
• Vancouver’s also hosting the FIFA Congress next spring. Translation: 200+ global delegates flying in to decide where future billions are spent—this time, it’s here.
What do we think 🤔
