Welcome to Vancouver, where the potholes are permanent, but at least we’re getting seven World Cup games for the low, low price of up to $624 million.

    •    The province says hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver could cost between $532M and $624M, up from April’s already-hefty estimate.
    •    The net cost? Between $100M and $145M, depending on how bad inflation, emergency planning, and general chaos get.
    •    About 350,000 fans are expected to flood BC Place next June and July.
    •    The feds are kicking in $166M, and a 2.5% tax on short-term rentals (read: your Airbnb trip to Kelowna) will help cover the tab.
    •    Vancouver’s also hosting the FIFA Congress next spring. Translation: 200+ global delegates flying in to decide where future billions are spent—this time, it’s here.

🇨🇦 Surrey’s throwing the biggest Canada Day party in Western Canada — and you’re invited.

Think: live music from The Reklaws, food trucks for days, DJs, dance battles, cold drinks (yes, there’s a beer garden), and a fireworks finale that actually delivers.

It’s free. It’s July 1. It’s at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre.
Show up for the vibes. Stay for the snacks.

City council approved extra funding this week for the Vancouver Aquatic Centre redesign, officially raising the cost to $175 million. The catch? The new plan includes replacing the Olympic-sized 50-metre pool with a smaller 25-metre one.

That’s sparked backlash from swim clubs, athletes, and parents who say losing the larger pool will hurt local training and competition.

The redesign also adds a lazy river and hot tub, but critics say they’re prioritizing aesthetics over function.

🏗️ Pool closes in 2026

A Vancouver man just claimed this year’s biggest Lotto Max jackpot in B.C. after buying two tickets from a 7-Eleven in Burnaby. He found out while at work, scanning the ticket from his bag — originally just looking for a cough drop
He hasn’t told his partner yet, planning to share the news in a special way. No word yet on whether he’s quitting his job, but he’s hoping to use the money to give back to his family and community.

The winning ticket was purchased at Imperial Street & Boundary Road. So far this year, B.C. players have claimed over $146 million in Lotto Max prizes.

Vancouver’s official uniform is going up in price — and if you work at Lululemon HQ, you might be out of a job and a pair of Wunder Unders.

The homegrown athleisure empire is cutting 150 corporate roles to brace for tariffs and “operate with more agility” — which is ironic, considering half the city already uses Lululemon as formal wear.

So yeah. Your Align leggings? About to cost more. And your cousin in product ops? Might be starting a candle business.

An 80-year-old man in North Van crashed his Subaru into an A&W drive-thru while reaching for his wallet — launching a deep fryer and severely burning an employee inside.

- The court called it a “momentary lapse.”
- The victim spent 3 weeks in a coma.
- The fine? $1,500.
- No driving ban.

📊 Vancouver just beat Calgary as the most livable city in North America.

According to The Economist, Van took the crown thanks to categories like “infrastructure” and “environment.”
Calgary, meanwhile, dropped from 5th to 18th — mostly because of declining health care scores.

So basically:
🏥 In Calgary, you’ll wait 13 hours in emerg.
🏠 In Vancouver, you’ll pay $3,300 to live in a shoebox.

Pick your poison, but at least the view’s nice.

Turns out 2025 might be the chillest it’s been since 2002 — assaults, robberies, break-ins, even stolen cars are all trending way down.

But before you start celebrating, shoplifting’s up 263%. So if your Red Bull or beef jerky goes missing, don’t expect justice.

Vancouver’s becoming safer… unless you’re a convenience store shelf.

If you thought dodging tourists was hard before, wait till they have the whole street. Vancouver’s Water Street will be closed to cars every Sunday from 10 AM–6 PM until the end of August. It’s part of a revamped pilot to boost foot traffic and revive the vibe.

🔹 Car-free zone: Richards to Columbia
🔹 Last year’s pilot brought a 35% foot traffic spike
🔹 Businesses still split: more people walking, but less parking = mixed sales

City’s betting Sundays-only keeps everyone happy.
