This piece reflects on the shifting state of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) as both a sound and subculture. Once defined by experimental rhythms, glitchy structures, and analog-meets-digital production methods, IDM has evolved in unexpected directions. As software dominates the workflow and AI tools integrate into music creation, the human-machine relationship at the heart of IDM has started to fragment.
“My Genre Is Dying” is documentation. It captures the dissonance of creating experimental music in an age where machines replicate style, but not spirit. It explores what happens when the original culture of innovation becomes saturated by imitation.
For long-time listeners, this is a continuation of the deconstruction that began with "Error Balm". For new listeners, it’s a raw entry point into post-IDM thinking: fractured tempo, corrupted sequencing, and sonic choices that reject polish in favor of presence.
This track and the Broken Flow project as a whole, doesn’t aim to recreate the past.
