Wow I did it 😍 ! Yesterday I posted my final podcast in this series of 6 interviews for the Feel Great Podcast.

I set out to do this project as I wanted to learn how to podcast and health and wellbeing for working mums is a topic that I’m really interested in.

A recent article in the Guardian said that working mums are 40% more stressed. I hope this will change. That we see employers become more supportive by embracing flexible working and encouraging dads to take paternity leave.

Thanks so much to all the amazing experts who agreed to be on the podcast and for sharing their knowledge and tips - , Jessica Chivers , Fiona Austin , Heather Pearson and .

I hope you’ve enjoyed listening 🎙

In the latest episode of the podcast I talk to Amy Stoddard/Ajayi about perfectionism.

Amy believes that if we want wellbeing then perfectionism is the worse thing we can do. Being imperfect is actually quite a wonderful thing that we can embrace. And our strive for perfectionism can actually have serious consequences for our mental health.

We talk about:
💛 Pressures on parents to get things right and finding balance between work and home
💛 People becoming committed to perfectionist thinking - for a short time it works, but it doesn’t work forever
💛 When we’re anxious we release stress hormones which interfere with how we function
💛 Knowing that it’s acceptable to be imperfect

Do tune in - it’s such an important topic for our health and wellbeing 🎙

I talk to Amy Stoddard-Ajayi who’s a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. She has been working in therapeutic environments for 15 years - and a lot of that time has been with women and families.

We talk about perfectionism and why striving for it isn’t necessarily good for our health and wellbeing.

New research published today reveals that parents sleep badly for 6 years after having a child - and that it’s worst for mums.

The study carried out by and the German Institute for Economic Research interviewed almost 5,000 parents over 7 years between 2008 and 2015.

Whilst the first 3 months were the most gruelling, the research found that women were sleep deprived both in terms of quality and quantity for up to four to six years after the birth of the first child.

One thing I’ve realised from the podcast is that sleep is so important for our wellbeing as working mums, perhaps the most important.

I’ve been lucky to interview some wonderful experts over the last 2 months who have shared their tips on how we can improve our health and wellbeing. Do listen to episode 1 with Anne Williams and episode 3 with if you haven’t had chance to yet. Both share some great tips on how we can sleep better

I loved chatting to Heather Pearson in episode 5 of the podcast, she had so many tips to share when it comes to eating for energy and nutrition for working mums.

Here are a few from the podcast:

💛 Eat a protein based breakfast - it’s the best way to set ourselves up for having energy throughout the day (and yes breakfast is the most important meal of the day! 😉)

💛 Eat protein based snacks (Bounce balls, protein bars, nuts and seeds) as well as fruit - this ensures we’re getting energy throughout the day

💛 If you’re getting the 3 o’clock munchies it’s a sign you’re not getting enough protein in your diet earlier in the day

Do listen to episode 5 - Heather is full of insightful advice on this topic and also on pain prevention and maintaining a healthy back🎙

I talk to Heather Pearson a sports therapist, strength coach and nutritionist. Heather is also author of ‘Back Pain Free - Put an end to your suffering with the Pearson Method’.

Heather is all about prevention when it comes to health and wellbeing. When we get over 30 things start slowing down - and we need to be proactive on preventing those aches and pains. I totally agree!

I chat to Heather on the podcast about:

💛 Healthy Back

💛 Nutrition

💛 Meditation and taking time out

I loved chatting to Heather - she is a font of knowledge when it comes to the body, nutrition and staying strong.

Hope you enjoy listening 🎙

One of the things I chat to Fiona Austin about in episode 4 of the podcast is the importance of nature 🌿and making meaningful connections with the outside world
🌳💚

We talk about how being constantly connected to tech can have negative repercussions on our wellbeing as the more we’re connected to our phones and our computers the more we’re disconnected to something that’s real.

I found our chat really inspiring and there’s lots of great tips from Fiona on how to get outside, be with nature and take some time out. There is more and more research to show the amazing benefits. So this week I’m going to:

Go for a walk at lunchtime 🌳
Have a play in the park 🍃🍁
Ask for a walking meeting whenever I can 🌿🍂

Hope you enjoy listening 🎙

‘Resentment between the sexes at work is boiling over. Men sneer at flexible working, while women are more stressed than ever’.

This was the headline of an article in yesterday’s by Christine Armstrong, author of ‘The Mother of All Jobs’.

Certainly a worrying and sad read of the current state of affairs in some UK industries including law, finance, management consultancy, media and advertising. Are we actually going backwards in terms of workplace gender equality?

You can read the full article here:

How about a walk? I love a walking meeting - it’s great to get outdoors 🌳🌿 and get movement into the body.

In episode 3 of the podcast shared a fantastic nugget of info about the importance of being outside, getting movement into your day and why walking meetings are so great.

Stanford looked at creativity and they confirmed that people are 60% more creative when they are moving vs. when they’re sitting. Think Aristotle and the ancients taking on their philosophical walks 😀

Separate research also indicates that when people walk side by side in the same direction, this tends to be a more constructive conversation than if they are facing each other with a desk between them.

Do take a listen - there are lots of other great tips from Deborah including stress, food and sleep 🎙
