📸 This photograph came to us the late from Buddy Young, the grandson of John Young, who was the inspiration behind J. Frank Dobie’s The Vaquero of the Brush Country.

On the left is Cass Edwards, and on the right, is Bruce Duncan. And yes, that’s a mountain lion strung across the front of the truck.

Cass Edwards was a key figure in early Alpine. He ran the first “car-for-hire” business in town and was one of the original automobile dealers in the Big Bend. He later opened the motion, picture theater, skating rink, and swimming pool.

He was a longtime baseball fan and civic leader and he’s the man who gave the Alpine Cowboys their name!!

As recorded in the Alpine Avalanche (June 28, 1962, Page 4-F), Cass suggested the name “Alpine Cowboys” when Herbert Kokernot Jr. was forming the team. Cass went on to serve as the club’s first secretary and treasurer and stayed active with the team for many years.

Cass married Lil Young, daughter of John Young, one of Brewster County’s earliest land dealers. Lil made her own mark in history as Alpine’s first duchess in the 1908 Battle of Flowers parade in San Antonio.

I love stories like this because they connect the names we’ve heard with the real people behind them like ranchers, team boosters, daughters of pioneers, men who hunted lions and named baseball teams and built towns with grit and imagination.
