*Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu Honoured as Abia Women Strengthen the Call to End Violence Against Women and the Girl Child*

The Mayor of Ohafia Local Government, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, was among the distinguished awardees honoured at the 2026 Local Government Ladies Association gathering held on April 30, in recognition of his steadfast support for women, his commitment to family-centred leadership, and his role in advancing policies that promote the welfare, protection, and progress of women in Ohafia Local Government. His recognition at the event reflected his continued dedication to meaningful governance and to measures that support the advancement of women in Ohafia local government and across Abia State.

The event was convened by the President of the Local Government Ladies Association, Chief Mrs. Ivory Ekwu, and brought together women leaders, government officials, and stakeholders from across Abia State under the theme: “Unite to End Violence Against Women and the Girl Child: The Role of Local Government Women.” It was a strong and timely call for united action in ending violence against women, strengthening the protection of the girl child, and promoting practical measures that improve the welfare, dignity, inclusion, and advancement of women in local government areas and the state as a whole.

The gathering was held in support of the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, whose visionary leadership, people-focused governance, and unwavering commitment to development continue to restore confidence in public service and drive meaningful progress across Abia State. His administration has remained intentional in promoting inclusive governance, strengthening local institutions, and creating policies that improve the lives of women, families, and communities. Also honoured at the heart of the event was Her Excellency, First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chioma Otti, whose commitment to protecting women, strengthening families, and promoting the social and economic advancement of women continues to inspire purposeful action across the state.

Her advocacy for safer communities, stronger support systems for women, and improved opportunities for the girl child formed a central part of the event’s message, as speakers highlighted the urgent need to protect women from violence, expand opportunities for their growth, and ensure their voices remain central in governance and development.

Also present at the event were the wife of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu; Chairman of the Abia State Local Government Service Commission, Elder James Okocha; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu; Chairman of the Day and Mayor of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government, Hon. Nnadozie Nwaogwugwu; Mayor of Umuahia North Local Government, Hon. Smart Ihuoma; and Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government, Dr. Anthony Nwaubani, alongside other notable leaders and stakeholders whose presence reinforced the importance of sustained collaboration in promoting women-focused development across the state.

Women from Ohafia Local Government were also strongly represented at the gathering, standing in solidarity with women from other local government areas in a shared commitment to advancing the cause of women, protecting the vulnerable, and promoting policies that strengthen the place of women in leadership, development, and community progress.

Chief Mrs. Ivory Ekwu reaffirmed the commitment of the Local Government Ladies Association to continue championing the welfare of women, defending the dignity of the girl child, and supporting practical measures that will strengthen women’s protection, participation, and advancement across the local government structure and Abia State as a whole. The gathering was both a celebration of purposeful leadership and a renewed call for sustained action toward building safer communities, stronger families, and a more inclusive society for women and girls.

The Labour Party on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, held its historic National Elective Convention at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Abia State, where Senator Nenadi Esther Usman PhD, former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Nigerian Economy, was returned as National Chairman of the party, while Hon. Iheanacho Obioma emerged as National Secretary alongside other newly elected National Working Committee officials.

The landmark convention attracted an impressive gathering of distinguished political leaders, elected officials, party stakeholders and notable dignitaries from across the federation, including the Governor of Abia State and National Leader of the Labour Party, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti OFR; Wife of the Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chioma Otti; Deputy Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Engr. Renowned for his calm administrative disposition, people-oriented governance style, and unwavering commitment to inclusive development, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu has continued to strengthen democratic participation and drive meaningful progress in Ohafia Local Government Area, further reflecting the growing influence of responsive leadership within the Labour Party.

Also in attendance were the Chairman of the 2026 National Convention and member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe; member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obinna Aguocha; member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Amobi Ogah; member representing Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ernest Mascot Ikwechegh; member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa; as well as respected elders and prominent stakeholders including Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha ( *Bourdex* ), Chief Barr. Jackson Agbai, *Okwodu* Egwuronu Obasi, and many other eminent leaders and party faithful.

In his address, the Governor congratulated the newly elected officers and described the rancour-free convention as a strong reflection of unity, maturity, and internal cohesion within the Labour Party. He charged the new National Working Committee to immediately commence reconciliation across all levels of the party, urging them to bring aggrieved members back into the fold and strengthen party unity ahead of future political engagements. He further emphasized the need to deepen the ongoing online electronic membership registration, address NIN-related registration challenges through collaboration with relevant agencies, and ensure that all forthcoming party primaries are conducted in a transparent, peaceful, and credible manner. The Governor, whose visionary leadership, administrative discipline, and reform-driven governance have continued to inspire confidence within and beyond Abia State, also reaffirmed his strong confidence in the leadership of Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, describing her as transparent, accountable, and exceptionally suited for the task of repositioning the Labour Party for greater national relevance and electoral success.

In their separate remarks, party stakeholders commended His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti OFR for his exemplary leadership, steadfast commitment to party unity, and pivotal role in stabilizing and repositioning the Labour Party as a formidable national political force.

The convention also featured the presentation of reports, adoption and ratification of critical motions, and the formal affirmation of the legitimacy of the National Caretaker Committee, while declaring the purported 2024 Nnewi Convention null and void. The event was observed by officials of INEC and attended by major stakeholders and party faithful from across the country, further underscoring the Labour Party’s renewed strength, unity, and readiness for victory.

OHAFIA 6TH LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL SCREENS, CONFIRMS IFEANYI KALU AS SUPERVISOR FOR WORKS

The 6th Legislative House of Ohafia Local Government Area has successfully screened and confirmed Hon. Ifeanyi Kalu of Ameke Abiriba as the new Supervisor for Works, following his nomination by the Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu.

The screening was held at the Legislative Chambers today and marked a major elevation for Hon. Ifeanyi Kalu, who, until his appointment, served as Personal Aide to the Mayor, a role he discharged with excellence.

Hon. Ifeanyi Kalu has a track record of service and is no stranger to responsibility. He previously served as Personal Aide and also as Supervisor for Works to Hon. Dr. Okoroafor Ukiwe during his tenure as Executive Chairman of Ohafia LGA from 2020 to 2022.

His return to the same office under the current Mayor, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, will be anchored on his proven expertise, reliability, doggedness, dedication, commitment, sincerity, professionalism, and humility. These qualities have defined his public service and once again earned him the confidence of the Mayor.

Speaking during the screening, a Councilor of the 6th Legislative House commended the Mayor’s choice, stating that from the CV of Ifeanyi Kalu, he is qualified for the service. He described him as “a round peg in a round hole,” one whose elevation is “a reward for hard work with more work.”

With his confirmation as Supervisor for Works, Hon. Ifeanyi Kalu now takes on a critical portfolio in the administration of Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu. The Works Department is central to the delivery of infrastructure, road maintenance, and public projects across Ohafia LGA's 11 wards.

A stakeholder at the screening expressed confidence that Hon. Ifeanyi Kalu will bring his wealth of experience from previous positions to bear, ensuring progress and success for Ohafia LGA and strengthening the leadership of the Mayor Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu.

Hon. Uchenna Okocha Onuoha (popularly known as Oji Ulo Eme Ogo), accompanied by a delegation of associates including his brother, Rev. David Okocha Onuoha of Ndi Agbor Nkporo, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu.

During the visit, Hon. Onuoha expressed his sincere appreciation to the Mayor for his outstanding works, impactful leadership, and visible commitment to grassroots development across Ohafia Local Government Area. He commended the Mayor’s dedication to service and his strides in improving the welfare of the people.

In his response, the Executive Mayor, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, expressed gratitude to Hon. Onuoha and his delegation for the visit and for their voluntary contributions toward community development. He emphasized the urgent need for good, visionary, and selfless individuals in government, stressing that leadership should not be an avenue for personal enrichment but a platform for service to the people.

*GOVERNOR OTTI FLAGS OFF ABIA ANPA MEDICAL MISSION*

On April 14, 2026, Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, officially flagged off the 5-day Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) Medical Mission, a free healthcare outreach holding in Aba and Umuahia.

The event drew key government officials and stakeholders, notably the Mayor of Ohafia LGA Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, whose presence underscored the growing alignment of grassroots leadership with the State’s healthcare transformation agenda, alongside the other mayors including the Host Mayor, Umuahia North LGA, Chief Smart Ihuoma. Also in attendance were the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu; Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa; Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini; Chairman House committee of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka T. Obioma (represented by the Deputy Chairman, Hon. Boniface Isienyi); Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba; and Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, among others.

Declaring the mission open, His Excellency Dr Alex chioma Otti OFR described ANPA as a critical development partner in the State’s healthcare reform, noting that the initiative not only delivers free consultations and surgeries but also strengthens local capacity through training, mentorship, and global collaboration. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accessible, high-quality healthcare and called for a structured, long-term partnership with ANPA, including digital health and telemedicine, to sustainably improve outcomes especially for vulnerable populations.

President of ANPA, Dr. Cliff Eke, commended the Governor’s leadership, noting that Abia is the first state to host back-to-back missions. The Health Commissioner disclosed that the mission targets over 1,500 consultations and 100 free surgeries.

The initiative also features capacity building for healthcare professionals and expanded community outreach, with a strong focus on improving access to quality care for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, nursing mothers, newborns, and infants further positioning Abia as a leading force in healthcare delivery in Nigeria and reinforcing the government’s commitment to restoring dignity through accessible and people-centered healthcare.

Following the recent courtesy visit of the Abiriba Labour Party Stakeholders on 5th April 2026 to His Excellency the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Chioma Otti OFR during which He directed the Ministry of Works to review the request of the delegation for further asphalting of existing community constructed concrete roads in Abiriba, The Ministry of Works Abia State, in collaboration with the Mayor of Ohafia LGA - Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu and the SA to the Governor on Trade - Chief Nwaka Inem carried out an extensive road inspection tour across key communities in Abiriba alongside the ACIU representative Hon. Nmaju Ukaku Ojebe as keen observers.

Leading the technical team from the Ministry of Works was Mr. Uka Onyekachi, who served as the lead technical representative, ensuring proper engineering assessment, measurement, and coordination throughout the inspection.

The tour covered key road corridors including the Awco Road axis through Iyi Okafor Mang, Usumani to Ogbu reaching the residence of Chief Robert Onyeani, Ogozi Ring Road exiting at Ezinne jxn.

Additional inspection was carried out from Orieakwa - Umueso - Afiankwo - Amuba/Binyom. Others are Afiankwo to Agboji and further extending to Ogbele Agboji. Link road from Chief John Okam’s house to Agboji to mention but a few.

This strategic engagement once again brings to the fore the commitment of the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, to infrastructure renewal and the rehabilitation of critical road networks that connect rural communities, boost economic activity, and improve accessibility and quality of life for residents across Abia State.

The life and legacy of Mother-in-Israel (Lolo) Mary Uba Nwankwo (née Oji Uka), a woman of grace, strength, and unwavering faith, were solemnly celebrated as she was laid to rest in her homeland.

A devoted mother and pillar of her family, she is the beloved mother of High Chief Oji Uba Nwankwo of Agbaja Nkporo, whose life reflects the values, discipline, and enduring legacy she so selflessly instilled. Her influence extended far beyond her immediate family, touching countless lives through her compassion, wisdom, and motherly guidance.

The burial ceremony, held in Agbaja Nkporo, drew family members, traditional leaders, dignitaries, and well-wishers who gathered to honour and celebrate a life well lived.

In a show of solidarity and respect, the Mayor of Ohafia LGA was in attendance, standing with the family in this moment of grief and offering his presence as a mark of honour to the memory of the departed matriarch. His attendance highlighted the community’s collective support and deep regard for the family.

At 67 years (1958–2025), Lolo Mary Uba Nwankwo leaves behind a legacy defined by virtue, love, and service - a life that will continue to inspire generations.

The solemn occasion brought together family members, friends, community leaders, and well-wishers who gathered to honour the life and legacy of the late Rev. Mrs. Grace Agbai Igiri - a woman remembered for her devotion, compassion, and lasting impact on those around her.

Late Rev. Mrs. Grace Agbai Igiri was the beloved wife of Rev. Dr. Agbai Igiri (Rtd.), the pioneer District Superintendent of Ali Udo District, Assemblies of God Nigeria.

The burial ceremony of Late K. O. Anya, the revered Ezeogo XII of Ufiele Aku, Ohafia, was solemnly conducted in an atmosphere of deep honour, reflection, and cultural dignity.

Late Ezeogo Okorie Kalu Anya (Teacher), 1939–2025, was the 12th Ezeogo of Ufieleaku Ohafia, Ohafia LGA, Abia State, Former Secretary to Ohafia Council of Monarchs (2005–2015), and the 2nd oldest sitting Ezeogo in Ohafia with 28 years on the throne (1997–2025).

The event drew distinguished personalities from within and beyond the community, underscoring the late monarch’s impactful reign and legacy. Among the eminent figures present was the Executive Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, who joined family, traditional leaders, and well-wishers in paying his final respects.

Also present was Elder Engr. Obinna Agwu Odum, the Director General of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA), alongside other notable sons of Ohafia, respected elders, and community leaders, all united in celebrating a life dedicated to tradition, leadership, and service to the people.

Late Ezeogo K. O. Anya is remembered as a custodian of culture, peace, and unity whose reign strengthened the bonds of Ufiele Aku and the wider Ohafia community. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his people.

The Executive Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, deeply commiserates with the family, Ufiele Aku traditional institution, and the entire Ohafia community, and stands in full solidarity with them during this moment of grief, praying that God grants the bereaved the strength to bear this irreparable loss.

A grand celebration of culture, honour, and tradition was witnessed during the coronation ceremony of HRH Ezeogo Joseph Ejituru Ebueme Uwaka as Nmaku of Amanta, held from Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th April 2026 at Obina Square, Amanta, Amaeke Abiriba.

The historic event attracted a distinguished gathering of leaders and dignitaries, including the Executive Mayor of Ohafia Local Government, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, alongside Dr. Robert Onyeani, Chief Ebueme Ezikpe, Lord Uche Eme, and several other respected sons and daughters of the land.

In his remarks, the Mayor of Ohafia Local Government, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and purposeful leadership, urging the newly crowned monarch to use his position to foster harmony, promote development, and strengthen the bond among the people of Amanta and the wider Abiriba community. He reaffirmed the commitment of the local government to support traditional institutions as vital partners in grassroots development.

A goodwill message from Chief Eme Uche Eme, Okpugo nde Abiriba Ancient Kingdom, further highlighted the significance of the moment, offering prayers for a long, peaceful, and prosperous reign, anchored on progress and the welfare of the Amanta Community.

In a remarkable show of support and solidarity, the royal father was presented with a car gift and generous donations by well-meaning dignitaries to aid his movement and enhance his effectiveness in carrying out his royal responsibilities.

The ceremony was marked by strong calls for peace, unity, and sustained development, with the monarch encouraged to remain a symbol of stability and a custodian of the rich cultural heritage of the people.
