*Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu Honoured as Abia Women Strengthen the Call to End Violence Against Women and the Girl Child*
The Mayor of Ohafia Local Government, Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, was among the distinguished awardees honoured at the 2026 Local Government Ladies Association gathering held on April 30, in recognition of his steadfast support for women, his commitment to family-centred leadership, and his role in advancing policies that promote the welfare, protection, and progress of women in Ohafia Local Government. His recognition at the event reflected his continued dedication to meaningful governance and to measures that support the advancement of women in Ohafia local government and across Abia State.
The event was convened by the President of the Local Government Ladies Association, Chief Mrs. Ivory Ekwu, and brought together women leaders, government officials, and stakeholders from across Abia State under the theme: “Unite to End Violence Against Women and the Girl Child: The Role of Local Government Women.” It was a strong and timely call for united action in ending violence against women, strengthening the protection of the girl child, and promoting practical measures that improve the welfare, dignity, inclusion, and advancement of women in local government areas and the state as a whole.
The gathering was held in support of the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, whose visionary leadership, people-focused governance, and unwavering commitment to development continue to restore confidence in public service and drive meaningful progress across Abia State. His administration has remained intentional in promoting inclusive governance, strengthening local institutions, and creating policies that improve the lives of women, families, and communities. Also honoured at the heart of the event was Her Excellency, First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chioma Otti, whose commitment to protecting women, strengthening families, and promoting the social and economic advancement of women continues to inspire purposeful action across the state.
Her advocacy for safer communities, stronger support systems for women, and improved opportunities for the girl child formed a central part of the event’s message, as speakers highlighted the urgent need to protect women from violence, expand opportunities for their growth, and ensure their voices remain central in governance and development.
Also present at the event were the wife of the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu; Chairman of the Abia State Local Government Service Commission, Elder James Okocha; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu; Chairman of the Day and Mayor of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government, Hon. Nnadozie Nwaogwugwu; Mayor of Umuahia North Local Government, Hon. Smart Ihuoma; and Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government, Dr. Anthony Nwaubani, alongside other notable leaders and stakeholders whose presence reinforced the importance of sustained collaboration in promoting women-focused development across the state.
Women from Ohafia Local Government were also strongly represented at the gathering, standing in solidarity with women from other local government areas in a shared commitment to advancing the cause of women, protecting the vulnerable, and promoting policies that strengthen the place of women in leadership, development, and community progress.
Chief Mrs. Ivory Ekwu reaffirmed the commitment of the Local Government Ladies Association to continue championing the welfare of women, defending the dignity of the girl child, and supporting practical measures that will strengthen women’s protection, participation, and advancement across the local government structure and Abia State as a whole. The gathering was both a celebration of purposeful leadership and a renewed call for sustained action toward building safer communities, stronger families, and a more inclusive society for women and girls.
