🏀Anchorwomen’s basketball season recap: Another great season, but downed in the semis🏀

It was another strong season for the Anchorwomen basketball team under Jenna Cosgrove as they were able to punch in their ticket to the Little East Conference (LEC) Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament with a semifinals berth to go alongside it.

The Anchorwomen had a plethora of players return for this season, including now 1,000-point scorers Madison Medbury and Angelina Nardolillo. Other returning members included Maggie McKitchen, Claire Greene, Maggie Schwab and Jayda Bing (Bing would make her debut later on in the season due to injury).

The Anchorwomen as a whole finished second in the LEC offensively with 65.2 ppg, while boasting the top defense in the conference allowing 54.2 ppg. They connected on 39.2% of their shots while holding opponents’ to just 32.4% shooting. They defended well from perimeter only allowing 26.4% of shots from range to fall in. They outrebounded the LEC, leading the conference in amount of rebounds and rebounds allowed. They also led in blocks and were second in assists in the LEC.

🏀Anchormen’s basketball recap: strong season for Anchormen ends in semifinals OT loss🏀

Two semifinal appearances in the Little East Conference (LEC) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament in Sam Ferry’s first two seasons head coach of the Anchormen showcases the resurgence the men’s basketball team has gone through since his hiring.

An improved-upon season from Ferry’s first year where his squad finished with a 15-12 overall record with a 7-9 conference finish, the Anchormen finished at 15-11 overall, going 10-6 in conference play to take on the tournament as the three-seed. While they swept through UMass Dartmouth at home 80-64, they were unable to hold off Western Connecticut State in the semifinal game at WestConn, as they lost 81-68 in an overtime comeback win for the Wolves.

The Anchormen were the LEC’s top team in rebounding, a 44.6 per game team average compared to second-place WestConn who averaged 39 per game. The team finished third in conference in assists and blocks.

‼️Donovan Assistant Director Dean Faoila arrested‼️

Rhode Island College’s Assistant Director of Dining Procurement and Resources, Dean Faoila, was arrested in his home on Tuesday after a swift investigation by the Providence Police Department (PPD) regarding a hidden camera found in a RIC public restroom.

The arrest followed a report by an anonymous student to Rhode Island College Campus Police (RICPD) this past Thursday of a camera hidden in a Donovan Dining Hall bathroom. Faoila was a familiar face on campus, having been a part of RIC staff since 2015.

‼️RIC reaffirms commitment to students‼️

In response to recent executive actions from the new presidential administration, Rhode Island College has emphasized its ongoing commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or other factors.

The college’s mission remains focused on providing accessible, high-quality education and supporting the diverse needs of its community.

In an email sent out last week, President Dr. Jack Warner addressed concerns within the campus, assuring students and staff that RIC will continue to support their educational goals, even in the face of changing federal policies. He acknowledged that many within the community are feeling uncertain but urged individuals to seek support and practice self-care during this challenging time.
To address the evolving situation, Dr. Warner has established an Ad Hoc Committee on Federal Policies. This group will assess how new federal directives may impact the campus and ensure that RIC responds thoughtfully and in compliance with the law. The committee will communicate regularly with updates via a dedicated email and an upcoming webpage, which will offer timely information and resources.

🇺🇸Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance made a powerful statement🇺🇸

Super Bowl LIX, which took place on Feb. 9 was watched by 127.7 million people, making it the most watched Super Bowl of all time. In a final score of 22-40, the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs, preventing them from achieving the first occurrence of three consecutive wins, nicknamed as a “three-peat.” However, one of the most anticipated events of the night was the annual Apple Music Halftime Show, headlined this year by Kendrick Lamar. And thus, the Coca-Cola Halftime Report ended, the lights dimmed and Lamar took the stage.

Jackson’s “Great American Game” intro didn’t just reference football as a known patriotic symbol, it was a comment on the race and political relations and division as well as socioeconomic issues that have shaped our nation for generations. This reference comes back throughout the duration of the show.

While the halftime show is usually seen as an entertaining break from the biggest football event of the year, many people saw this year’s halftime show as impactful as it showcased the cultural, social and political divide in the country at the moment.

‼️Is Elon Musk changing the federal government⁉️

President Donald Trump and Elon Musk have initiated significant changes to the federal government through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aiming to streamline operations and reduce spending. This initiative has led to the closure of government agencies, the attempted freezing of federal funds and unauthorized access to private information by DOGE, raising concerns about the erosion of democratic principles.

Rhode Island Trump supporters have also raised concerns. During a “Telephone Town Hall,” constituents expressed unease about Musk’s access to government records and the potential impact of attempted federal funding freezes on programs like HealthSource RI.

Representative Gabe Amo, who represents the state’s First Congressional District, hosted this “Telephone Town Hall” on Feb. 6, 2025, allowing constituents from across RI to call in and voice their concerns.

“Otherwise, we might just go down quietly”: students protest in Trump’s America
On Feb. 5, 2024 hundreds of Rhode Islanders gathered at the Capitol Building in Providence to partake in the nationwide movement “50501,” shorthand for “50 protests, 50 states, one day.” The protests were in response to the over 50 executive orders that President Trump has issued in his first few weeks in office.

🧛Dracula is out for blood in Jonathan Pineda’s “They Only Come at Night”🧛

Dracula and his second-in-command Regina Renfield return in the anticipated sequel to Jonathan Pineda’s “He Only Comes at Night.” Preying on unsuspecting sisters Lucy, Mina and their friends one Christmas is but a game to these cold-blooded killers as they wreak havoc in “They Only Come at Night,” Pineda’s newest short film.

Rhode Island College student and filmmaker, Pineda filmed “He Only Comes at Night” last year and has since been determined to make each project he releases better than the last. Working alongside RIC’s dedicated film department has aided Pineda in building his filmography as a budding director and making a name for himself in Rhode Island’s film scene.

Be on the lookout for more projects from Pineda and RIC’s film department to support local talent. Visit Pineda’s website to stay updated on projects to come and watch “They Only Come at Night” on Youtube now.

📕From my shelf to yours: science-fiction📙

Science-fiction is a simply weird genre that has captured readers’ imaginations since pulp magazines became mainstream in the 1890s: containing only fiction and worth about a penny, allowing writers ultimate creativity. Despite originating over 100 years ago, literary scholars have struggled to come up with any certain criteria that makes up science-fiction, leading to a genre that is just as vast as it is strange.

Here are some of my favorite science-fiction reads to add to your collection:

Kazuo Ishiguro is a contemporary author that has recently caught readers’ attention. Writing mostly science-fiction, one of his most popular works continues to be “Klara and the Sun.”

“Kindred” by Octavia Butler creatively uses time travel to tell the story of slavery in the antebellum south.

Avid readers might know Margaret Atwood for her award-winning novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it is not her only science-fiction marvel. “Oryx and Crake” follows Snowman, a human with a defeatist attitude living a post-apocalyptic world where he might be the last of his kind.

The science-fiction genre provides for a wide scope of possibilities ranging from the rise of artificial intelligence to the downfall of the human species. If you’re in search of something unique to begin reading in 2025, one of these pieces of strange fiction might have what you’re looking for.

‼️Federal Funding Frozen⁉️

In a surprising move, President Trump announced an executive order to freeze federal funding effective January 28th. This decision has left many wondering about the implications and potential impact on various sectors, as well as worrying about how this could affect them personally.

As students, this executive order could have affected our financial aid. The Financial Aid Office sent out an email regarding this, saying that they initially were unsure how to proceed.
This decision created panic on campus as well, with a junior at RIC Lily, stating that “it was very surreal to get an email like that. You see a lot of “dooming” on social media, but when it directly impacts your life, the realization of how bleak things look for myself, for my friends and my family, it is chilling. I know if financial aid were to be taken away, me and a lot of other people would not have the privilege of an education. It feels like we’re going backwards.”

‼️Child protection in America‼️
The recent inauguration of President Donald J. Trump has fear rising across America. In New England, all blue states, anxiety is prominent as this nation’s empathy appears to be inconspicuous.

President Trump and his administration have given their own green card to permit United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers to enter schools, searching for illegal children to deport them. The Trump administration has focused on immigration enforcement, while measures to ban military-style assault rifles and other guns still remain debated.

Sensitive areas such as churches, schools, after-school programs, playgrounds and daycare centers were previously protected in the recent past, but under the Trump administration, that protection has now been overturned.

This raises important questions and concerns for migrant students in America.

The First Few Days of Trump

Donald Trump’s first few days as the 47th President of the United States were marked by a swift return to the aggressive, nationalist policies that characterized his first term.

Within hours of taking office, President Trump signed a series of executive orders aimed at reversing key policies from the Biden administration, particularly in areas such as immigration, energy, and trade.

Internationally, Trump reaffirmed his “America First” foreign policy, withdrawing the U.S. from several international agreements, including the Paris Climate Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, UNESCO, the Iran nuclear deal, and the UN Human Rights Council, and reasserting his stance on renegotiating trade deals.

Domestically, his administration quickly began to focus on economic growth through tax cuts and deregulation. Trump’s messaging emphasized a return to American greatness, framing his policies as essential to restoring the nation’s dominance in global markets.

Nearly every American is affected in some way because of these executive orders, and not in beneficial ways. Many Americans have been forced to take paid leave and are now under scrutiny simply for being themselves.

‼️Rhode Island’s historical shift to the right‼️

Rhode Island is one of the safest blue states in the country. Yet, in the 2024 presidential election, it mirrored the nation’s historic shift to the right. Kamala Harris won Rhode Island by just 13.6 points, which is an unusual margin for a safe blue state. Rhode Island has not voted for a Republican president since the landslide GOP victory in 1984.

Rhode Island saw a local shift to the right with multiple Republican victories seen throughout the state. Donald Trump also made gains in all 39 of Rhode Island’s cities and towns since 2020, sounding the alarm bells for the DNC. This shift within one of the bluest states in the country reflects the broader trend we’re seeing nationwide.

One of the initial reactions on the RIC campus was a Letter to Immigrant Students, signed by 60+ faculty members, emphasizing their support for students with precarious legal status.

🏳️‍⚧️Unity Center focuses on trans rights with “Empowered To Advocate”🏳️‍⚧️

A small yet diverse crowd gathered in the Unity Center beneath Donovan Dining Hall on Oct. 24 to attend a community meeting on a hot topic given the upcoming election: bodily autonomy. Those in attendance were of a wide range of ages, identities and cultures, proving that the issue is one that affects a great volume of people.

“You should be able to do whatever you want to yourself safely & without judgment,” stated Jocelyn Foye during the one-hour presentation. Foye is the executive director of The Womxn Project, a nonprofit organization centered around accessible healthcare, bodily autonomy and legislative advocacy.

The organization’s website specifies that the term “womxn” is inclusive not just to cisgender women, but to “trans people, non-binary and gender-fluid people.” As such, the term “bodily autonomy” applies not just to people’s right to contraception or abortion, but also to express whatever gender identity one aligns with. Violations of bodily autonomy in regards to trans people frequently include legislation on what one is (and more often, what one is not) allowed to do to their body in order to express their gender identity.

The day following the meeting, a member of The Anchor sat to speak with Danii De La Rosa, the Assistant Director for the Unity Center at Rhode Island College. “It was really a conversation between our director and the executive director of The Womxn Project,” said Rosa when asked about the Unity Center’s choice to host an event in the Empowered to Advocate series. The Unity Center’s web page describes it as a place that promotes equality and offers a space to touch on difficult topics of oppression. “This space provided a space for all of this to happen, ... for folks to get involved.”

❤️RI partnership for mental health💛

Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner AngÊlica Infante-Green have announced a new partnership with Hazel Health to bolster mental health support for students. This initiative aims to provide expanded mental health services in Rhode Island schools, reflecting the growing recognition of the importance of mental well-being in education.

Hazel Health, known for its innovative telehealth solutions, will offer virtual mental health services directly to students. This partnership comes at a crucial time, as many young people face increasing challenges related to mental health, exacerbated by the ongoing impacts of the pandemic.
The program will be implemented in schools across the state, offering services such as virtual counseling sessions and mental health resources for students and their families. This approach addresses immediate needs and aims to foster a culture of mental wellness within the educational system.

📕Ryka Aoki, “Light from Uncommon Stars” author enters orbit at RIC📙

This year’s Open Books Open Minds (OBOM) book of choice, “Light from Uncommon Stars” features a woven tale of demons, aliens, donuts and music. Meet Ryka Aoki, the creative mind behind the novel as she reveals what inspired her story before her visit to RIC on Nov. 7.

Aoki’s goal in writing her novel is to break down the boundaries between marginalized groups. “It is easy to think of any marginalized group as static, as fixed in their otherness. This is an immigrant. That is a q***r. There is a paraplegic.” Alternatively, Aoki prompts relationships beyond allyship in the form of neighbors, friends and partners. “I’ve spent most of my life dreaming of other stars...other galaxies. However, as I grew older, I learned more about the science of it all—and realized that I might not live to see humans colonize another planet, or visit even the nearest stars. But there are entire universes to be discovered right next to us… Walking past you, at this moment, could be an ‘alien’ whom you might one day trust with the keys to your starship—or even your soul.”

Aoki prompts writers at RIC to write for their truest selves, for the best work comes from one’s own vulnerability. “Most of the mistakes I’ve made as a writer have come from writing the work that I ‘should’ be writing. And all of my happiest moments, my most satisfying moments, have come from when I wrote my own words, my own poems and stories and music–no matter how unmarketable or weird they might have seemed. And sometimes, your words will help readers discover theirs, as well.”

Aoki would like to thank RIC for choosing “Light from Uncommon Stars” as OBOM’s Common Book of 2024 and is excited to speak with RIC students this coming Thursday, Nov. 7 from 4:30–6:30 p.m. in Gaige Hall 100.

⚽️Jackson Fox scores lone goal as Anchormen down UMass Dartmouth, 1-0⚽️

In the return of four key playmakers for Rhode Island College, Jackson Fox was the guy to make the big play, with his goal in the 66th minute enough to down UMass Dartmouth in a 1-0 defensive standoff and improve their standing to 5-1 in the Little East.

The Anchormen hosted UMass Dartmouth for their 7 pm matchup Wednesday night, returning home after their 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine this past Saturday, sailing past the Huskies despite the absences of Tariq Adio, Jackson Fox and Sekou Kamara in the shorthanded victory. Sophomore defender Alijah Nunes was also out with injury but returned tonight along with the other three Anchormen mentioned.

The 2-7-3 Corsairs (0-3-2 LEC) looked to find some traction at Alumni Field after a 4-2 bludgeoning by Western Connecticut State at home on Oct. 12th.
