Most boats handle best when running parallel with their at-rest waterline. Accordingly, outboards and sterndrives feature a power trim adjustment that allows you to change the engine's angle of thrust by tilting it "out" or "in" in relation to the transom in order to maintain the proper running angle.

Six years ago, this bluefin tuna was tagged off the coast of Nova Scotia by Walter Harris aboard Captain Joel Jacquard’s boat, Atlantic Angler. When it was initially tagged, it was estimated to be around 700 pounds. This past summer, this fish was recaptured in the waters of Stellwagen Bank, Massachusetts. It was caught by Nick Logan on Captain Bryan Sears’ boat, Line Shy. The bluefin tuna was measured at 115 inches and had an estimated weight of 900 pounds! The crew opted re-released the fish, rather than harvesting it.

This recapture emphasizes the importance of responsible tag and release methods. This fish was able to put on about 200 pounds in six years. Western Atlantic bluefin tuna are able to grow to a maximum estimated weight of 2,000 pounds, meaning in the upcoming years this fish could double in size.

This tag and data were gathered in association with the Large Pelagic Research Laboratory's tag-a-tiny program. Large Pelagics Research Center

30 years ago today, Jerry Murphy, a trawler from Pascagoula and his crew brought in a net that was filled with silver Spanish coins that dated back to 1783! The name of the fishing vessel they were on was coincidentally named “The Mistake”.

This ended up being quite the discovery as underwater archaeologists determined it was the El Cazador, known as “The Shipwreck that changed the world”.

In the 1770’s the Spanish controlled Louisiana Territory’s economy was failing, and so Charles III of Spain ordered captain Gabriel de Campos y Pineda to sail the Spanish brig of war, El Cazador to Veracruz, New Spain (present day Mexico), on 20 October 1783. There she was to be loaded with silver Spanish coins, mostly 8 reales, “Pieces of Eight,” that were to be used to bolster the region’s economy. On 11 January 1784, El Cazador set sail for New Orleans and was never heard from again.

Some historians speculate that had El Cazador made it to New Orleans, and its treasure been able to bolster the economy, Spain might not have given the territory back to France in 1801. And, in turn, the United States would not have been able to acquire it for 15 million dollars in 1803 (The Louisiana Purchase).

You can learn more about this shipwreck at Mississippi Shipbuilding & Maritime Center in Pascagoula where they have an exhibit that tells the story of El Cazador and its discovery.
