COLUMBIA COUNTY QUIETLY PULLS INMATE SEARCH TOOL, LEAVES PUBLIC IN THE DARK

Columbia County has stopped posting its inmate search online, saying scammers were using it to target families. But arrests are still posted elsewhere — and now jail staff have more work.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Should the county bring it back and focus on catching scammers, or was taking it down the right move?

MCDONALD’S EMPLOYEE CAUGHT POCKETING CASH IN MARTINEZ
A McDonald's employee is lovin’ less than what she’s facing now after a case of cash theft led to her arrest last week.
Makayla Brown, 18, was arrested on Monday and charged with theft by taking, following a brief investigation that served up damning video evidence, hot and fresh from the drive-thru at the McDonald’s in Martinez.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office report, the golden arches on Washington Road were the site of some golden mischief between August 23 and August 25. The incident came to light when Sara Odom, manager of the McDonald’s, noticed $120 missing from the drive-thru register following a routine shift cash count.
Odom was tipped off by another employee and promptly reviewed security footage, which allegedly revealed Brown slipping drive-thru cash into her back pocket, a sheriff’s report says.
When confronted over the phone, Brown reportedly denied knowing where the money had gone. But deputies confronted her in person and played the video back. Brown remained silent when asked to explain the footage, which led officers to place her under arrest on the spot.
Deputies transported Brown to the Columbia County Detention Center, where a magistrate judge signed a warrant for the charge of theft by taking.
The stolen $120 has not been recovered.
