AI video startup Runway just raised $315 million, nearly doubling its valuation to $5.3 billion.

But this isn’t just about better video tools. Runway says the new funding will go toward building more advanced “world models” — AI systems that understand environments, predict outcomes, and plan ahead. Many researchers believe world models are the next step beyond today’s large language models.

The company recently launched Gen 4.5, adding HD video, native audio, long-form multi-shot scenes, character consistency, and advanced editing. It has reportedly outperformed video models from Google DeepMind and OpenAI on several benchmarks.

Runway is also expanding into gaming and robotics, moving beyond media and advertising.
