It’s happening again! This Thursday, October 9, you can catch the new 30-minute film, Rising River’s Edge, playing at All Souls Church in Greenfield at 7 PM.
This kicks off the LAVA Film Festival, but note: it’s being screened at this larger venue at 399 Main St.
Free!

We had a great kickoff screening a few weeks ago so if you missed it, please come out!
Here’s some information and pictures from some of the great articles that came out after the soft opening.

Rising River’s Edge: The Climate Crisis in Franklin County
The 30-minute film explores the major struggles of local farmers in the face of climate change, and the importance for food resiliency in our region.

Rising River’s Edge examines the plight of our foods systems in Franklin County in the face of a changing and unpredictable climate. In the past two years alone, we have experienced heavy rains, floods, late frosts, April snowfalls, and drought. This has wreaked havoc on our food systems, while occurring in the face of food insecurity issues that 50% of Franklin County’s population faces.

Filmmakers Hugh Finnerty, Clara Witty, Matthew Barlow, and Rebecca Rideout examine the plight of our farmers in Franklin County, their struggles, and their resiliency in planning for this unpredictable new normal. They also trace this new normal down through the local food systems to consumers, and the importance of their actions in supporting local economies.

Featured farms and organizations include Red Fire Farm, Just Roots, Clark Brothers Orchard, and Stone Soup Cafe.

Funding for this film was provided by MassHumanities via the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Greening Greenfield and the LAVA Center.

The soft opening for the new 30-minute film exploring the effects of climate change on farming and community in Franklin County was a packed success! 'Rising River's Edge', a project I helped on with a great team as part of LAVA Arts Organization in Greenfield, was funded in part by a Mass Humanities grant.
Our first screening at the Greenfield Public Library had 84 viewers show up on a Monday night! Great response and enthusiasm from the community for this emotional, distressing, and honest look at the situation for our farmers and community here in a rural and poverty-stricken region.
But: we've got resiliency and community ON TAP around here, so we're excited to share this with more groups and encourage conversations and action on farm support.
Message me if you want a link or a screening request, and I'll pass it on to LAVA!
It will next be kicking off the LAVA Film Festival on Thursday Oct. 9 - check out their website for more details on the venue closer to the date:

“For so many small-scale farmers, a little bit of money goes a long way.” -Susan Mitchell, Cloverleigh Farm

Another very well-spoken farmer who found a big impact from the AAmerican Farmland Trustmicrogrants program, now a part of the Brighter Future Fund. 🍅
This excerpt about Cloverleigh Farm was part of a 6-farm extravaganza we produced a few years ago for AFT!

📹 In a similar way, a small video can make a huge impact: it’s a quick, simple way to thank your donors, kick off a fundraising campaign, or show at private meetings with potential donors, saving you time and energy.

Anyway… 🥕 Support your local food growers! 🥕 Support your local farm organizations! Call your reps to explain why cutting funding and grants to local agriculture hurts us all! 🥕 We need them.

Excerpt from a six-farm marathon we filmed back in 2020 for the American Farmland Trust 's Farmer Microgrants program, which has now grown to a nationwide program providing small grants to 253 farmers!

(now under the Brighter Future Fund, if you’d like to check it out!)
This one features Wild Harmony Farm and their young family, which has grown so much since then!

It was a bit bittersweet to watch these and trim them today for posts, knowing the massive cuts to grants and federal funding for our local farms right now. And also incredibly healing & hopeful to see the beauty these people have created on their land.

➡️Private investors, please step up and help these grants and many more funding sources continue, to help these amazingly hard-working people. 🙏🙏
🥕
We hope to drop more of these on Thursdays - feel free to follow along for some dopamine-building viewing. 😌 🌾🌱🥕

Thanks to Ezra Distler for gorgeous aerials and macro-cinematography in all of these!

“Y” haven’t we shared the video we made last summer for Franklin County's YMCA 's Camp Apex? Maybe it was because we were awaiting camp sign-up season! Or maybe we all need some gurgling brooks and deep green hues to get us through the gray March weather. 🍃
Either way, enjoy this excerpt! and stay tuned for short reels that they will be using for promotion of the upcoming camp sign-up season. 🍉🩱🌳
When we make a video together, many videos are born: an anchor video, as well as several social media reels, and the cleaned, raw footage, upon request - to make as many posts on your own as you can handle! 🎉🥳

Video to the rescue? 🏹
It’s been startling to see the federal changes already affecting our daily work (here’s a view from the edit seat.)
Many agencies and farm orgs we work with have already been affected by federal funding cuts.
We’ve had three clients in the last few weeks pivot our projects toward making content to use for private fundraising, instead of our original goals.
Or, they’ve expanded the scope to create an additional video for private funders.
Private funding cannot possibly fill the gap that is left from federal grants being pulled from farms and nonprofit agencies in our region, but if our videos can help pull in more dollars to help them, that makes our work feel a bit more worth it, in these crazy times.
