-Held in Charleston, South Carolina, at a former Confederate prison camp. Newly freed African Americans properly reburied 257 Union soldiers who had died in the prison and were in a mass grave.

-Attended by thousands of freed slaves, along with some white missionaries and Union soldiers, participated.

-A large parade and ceremony involved Black schoolchildren singing, ministers delivering sermons, and picnics.

It was a powerful act of remembrance and celebration of Union victory and emancipation by those who had gained their freedom.
