The part of you that shuts down in conflict is not the problem.
Neither is the part that gets loud. Or the part that needs to fix everything right now. Or the part that disappears until things feel safe again.

These are protector parts. They formed because something needed protecting.

Maybe you grew up in a house where conflict meant danger. Maybe love was conditional and you learned to manage yourself carefully to keep it. Maybe you never saw two people work through something hard and come out closer on the other side.
So you adapted. You built parts that could handle it.

The problem is not that those parts exist. The problem is when they run the show in your adult relationships without you knowing it.

You do not have to dismantle them. You have to get to know them. Understand what they are protecting. And slowly, give them something different to work with.

That is not a quick fix. It is a real one.

If you want support doing this work in your relationship, The Regulation Ritual is a good place to start. Free. Link in bio. Or if you are ready to go deeper, there is a consult link in bio too.

It is the part of you that figured out how to get through childhood. How to stay safe when things were unpredictable. How to get love when love had conditions. How to manage pain when no one helped you do that.

It worked. That is why it is still here.

But the adaptive child does not grow up on its own. It keeps running the same plays. In your adult relationships. With your partners. In the moments that matter most.

So when you go cold in conflict, or push harder than you want to, or say the thing you immediately regret, that is not a character flaw. That is your adaptive child doing its job.

The shift is not about getting rid of it. It is about learning to recognize it. And then making a different choice from a more grounded place.

That is what nervous system work actually does.

Save this one for the next time you catch yourself mid-reaction. The Regulation Ritual walks you through what to do in that moment. Free guide in bio.

When you snap, shut down, or say something you didn't mean, that is not who you are. That is a part of you doing what it learned to do a long time ago.

Terry Real calls it the adaptive child. It is the part that formed when you were young, trying to get through hard things without much support. It learned to protect you. It got very good at it.

The problem is that it does not always know the difference between then and now.

So when conflict comes up in your relationship, your nervous system does not stop to ask "is this actually dangerous?" It just reacts. Fast. From that old place.

You are not that reaction. You are the one who can learn to notice it.

That is where the work begins.

If this is landing, The Regulation Ritual is a free guide I made for exactly this moment. Link in bio.

A month ago I relaunched this account because I wanted to build something that actually served the relationships I care about most. Q***r relationships. Polyamorous and CNM relationships. Relationships carrying the weight of a world that was not built for them.

Over the last four weeks I have shared a lot about nervous systems, conflict, repair, and why the same fight keeps happening. If any of it landed, I want you to know there are two ways to go deeper.

The first is free. The Regulation Ritual is a practical guide for taking space during conflict in a way that actually regulates your nervous system instead of just pausing the argument. It is a good place to start and it is yours at no cost.

The second is working together directly. A free 15 minute consultation, no sales script, just a real conversation about where you are and whether my approach is a good fit. If it is, we build from there.

You do not have to be in crisis to begin. You just have to want something different.

There is something particular about trying to do relationship work when the mainstream resources were not built for you. When the books assume a certain kind of partnership. When the frameworks do not account for what you are actually carrying. When you are q***r, polyamorous, navigating a world that keeps shifting under you, and trying to find support that actually understands your terrain without you having to explain yourself first.

It gets lonely. Even when you are not alone.

What I have noticed in my own life and in my work is that community changes something that individual work cannot. Being in a room, even a virtual one, with people who get it. Who are asking the same questions. Who are not starting from scratch every time they open their mouth.

That is what I am building with The Relational Practice. A small, supported community for people doing this work. Monthly live calls, resources, and a space where your relationships are the norm not the exception.

It is not open yet. But it is coming. And if this resonates, I want you to be the first to know.

Most people come in knowing something is off but not being able to name it. They can describe the fight. They can tell you who said what. But the pattern underneath it, the nervous system dynamic that keeps pulling them back to the same place, that part is harder to see.

That is what we slow down together.

Not to relitigate the argument. To understand what is actually happening between you. What your nervous system is doing. What your partner's nervous system is doing. Where the dance breaks down and why.

Some of that work goes deeper than the relationship itself. We look at the parts of you that show up in conflict. The part that pushes harder. The part that goes quiet. The part that learned a long time ago that this is how you survive a hard moment. Those parts are not problems to fix. They are information. And when you can see them clearly, you stop being run by them.

Then we build skills. Not scripts. Real capacity for regulation so you can actually access what you know when it counts. Real repair so ruptures do not accumulate into distance.

What changes is not that you stop having conflict. What changes is that conflict stops feeling like evidence that something is fundamentally broken between you.

Free 15 minute consult in bio. Just a real conversation about what's actually happening.

If you are in a polyamorous or consensual non-monogamy relationship you already know this. A hard conversation with one partner can change the whole texture of your day. You show up to the next person carrying something you have not fully processed yet. They feel it even if they do not know what it is. The whole system can absorb the strain.

This is not a flaw in polyamorous or CNM relationships. It is just how nervous systems work. We are porous. What happens in one relationship lives in our body and comes with us everywhere else.

Which means regulation is not just personal in polyamorous and CNM systems. It is relational. When you take care of your nervous system after a hard conversation, you are not just doing it for yourself. You are doing it for every relationship you are tending.

One thing that helps is transparency. If you are activated and need space, letting other partners know you are in a regulated pause prevents confusion. It keeps one person's stress from quietly becoming everyone's stress.

You do not have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep coming back to yourself first.

Nobody taught me how to repair either.

I learned by watching the adults around me, and most of them did not know how to do it either. I inherited their patterns and spent a long time wondering why coming back after conflict felt so impossible.

Repair is not something you either have or you do not. It is a skill. And like any skill it can be learned, practiced, and built over time.

An apology and repair are not the same thing. An apology explains. Repair reconnects. You can be good at saying sorry and still leave your partner feeling completely alone in the rupture.

Real repair has a sequence. You cannot do it when you are still flooded. Regulation comes first. Then curiosity about what your partner actually experienced. Then ownership of your part. In that order.

You are not broken. You were just never shown how. That is exactly what this work is for.

Sometimes we use space to prepare. To build our case, rehearse what we should have said, run through everything our partner got wrong. It feels productive. It is not.

Rehearsing an argument keeps your nervous system in the conflict. Your body does not know the difference between the real conversation and the one you are running in your head. You come back more flooded than when you left and then wonder why the space did not help.

Taking space is not for resolving the argument. It is for regulating your nervous system so resolution becomes possible.

Regulating looks different for everyone. A walk without your phone. Slow breathing. A familiar playlist. Whatever brings your body back online without keeping your mind in the argument.

Repair does not begin when you walk back in the room. It begins the moment you decide to actually regulate instead of rehearse.

The Regulation Ritual is a free guide that walks you through exactly how to regulate, not rehearse, and how to come back ready to actually repair. Link in bio.

Most people reach out when something has broken. A fight that went too far, a pattern that won't stop repeating, a moment where someone said I don't know how much longer I can do this. That is valid. That is where a lot of good work starts.

But you do not have to be there to begin. Some of my best work happens with couples who are okay. Who love each other, who are mostly doing fine, and who still feel like something is missing. More ease. More repair. More of actually feeling known by the person they chose.

Wanting that is not a red flag. It is not ingratitude. It is just knowing that what you have could hold even more.

If you are q***r, polyamorous, or navigating a world that keeps shifting under you, you deserve support that actually understands your terrain. Not just tolerates it. I offer a free 15 minute consultation. No sales script. Just a real conversation about where you are and whether working together makes sense.
