DON’T USE THE ADA SONGOR ISSUES TO REVIVE YOUR DEAD POLITICAL CAREERS
The Songor Lagoon stands as a testament to the natural wealth of Ada, a resource whose redevelopment cannot be overemphasized in the face of its prolonged destruction. For years, the paramount chief and his council have persistently pleaded with successive governments to turn their attention to the Songor Lagoon. These cries, unfortunately, have fallen on deaf ears, leading to the degradation of this vital resource.
In a bid to salvage the lagoon from total collapse, the paramount chief and his group of chiefs sought an investor for its redevelopment. This initiative, aimed at preserving the lagoon and promoting economic growth, garnered government support through parliamentary approval. However, the introduction of the investor has sparked agitations, which as a youth group, we believe are politically motivated and sponsored.
The recent actions of two NDC members of parliament, Hon. Christian Corleytey and Hon. Nii Lantey, have only served to vindicate the youth's stance. Their sudden interest and agitation over the Songor Lagoon's redevelopment reveal the political undercurrents driving this opposition. Both MPs have a history of inaction regarding the lagoon's dire state during their terms in power. It is noteworthy that under their rule, the Songor Salt Company struggled to the point of being unable to pay salaries, yet Hon. Christian Corleytey’s sister emerged as the largest salt merchant in Ada, allegedly funneling returns to the NDC party in Sege. How can he now claim the moral authority to scrutinize the parliamentary select committee's report on the best way forward?
Hon. Nii Lantey, whose mother hails from Ada, did nothing to assist the people during his tenure but now positions himself as an obstacle to the lagoon’s redevelopment. His sudden interest in the Songor Lagoon’s issues reeks of opportunism, aiming to revive his dwindling political career rather than genuinely addressing the community's needs.
The parliamentary select committee's recommendations were clear and aimed at benefiting the locals. They suggested that the company should allocate more land for the locals, continue engaging with the community to foster peace and support local salt production through the community pan system. The investor is already implementing these recommendations, giving out more land to other groups to enhance salt production. The challenge here is not the investor's actions but the unnecessary political machinations that have stalled Ada's progress for too long.
Hon. Nii Lantey and Hon. Christian Corleytey must account for their contributions to Ada before criticizing efforts to promote societal growth. Their political strategy, masked as concern for the people, is a transparent attempt to boost their party's appeal at the expense of genuine development. Hon. Nii Lantey, a former youth and sports minister, did nothing to benefit Ada, and Hon. Christian Corletey, a three-term MP, has failed to contribute meaningfully.
We, the youth of Ada, declare that we will resist any political maneuvering, especially from the NDC, that seeks to exploit the Songor Lagoon's issues for political gain. The development of Ada and the preservation of the Songor Lagoon are far too important to be derailed by selfish political ambitions.
Enough is enough. Let genuine efforts to redevelop the Songor Lagoon proceed unimpeded for the betterment of our community and nation.
