**Site Preparation**: Soils and Structures is donating some of their services to the project. -

**Engineering**: Prein and Newhoff, a firm in Norton Shores, is handling all engineering work. -

# # # Highlights: -

**Artist**: Lee S. Brown, a long-time Muskegon-area award-winning artist. -

**Local Involvement**: All work is being carried out by Muskegon and Muskegon-area contractors and companies. -

**Community-Focused**: All funds donated are staying within the community. Muskegon conceived. Muskegon built.

# # # Project Timeline: - **Expected Completion**: Confidently aiming for August, although this is not a confirmed date. Updates will be provided on the installation and dedication gathering date. -

**Dedication Event**: There will be no unveiling, but a dedication and celebration for this 42'+ giant sculpture. # # # About Corten Steel: -

**Properties**: Corten steel, also known as weathered or weathering steel, develops a rust-colored appearance in a few months, forming a protective patina. -

**Color Evolution**: The initial rust appearance is lighter and will darken over a year or two, continuing to develop a rich, protective color. -

**Artists Using Corten Steel**:
- Richard Serra (San Francisco, CA)
- Donald Judd (Marfa, TX)
- Richard Hunt (Chicago, IL)
- Lee S. Brown (Muskegon, MI)

Stay tuned for further updates as the project progresses and for the announcement of our dedication date!

If you live close, today, the Mahar family opens their greenhouse for the season. While you're at it, see if the sunflowers have sprouted at Fatbird Seed, also known as the Van Agen Sod Farm ... I love to think about these two neighbors of my parent's farm maintaining a tradition of agriculture. Now add agricultural tourism, and you've given the land purpose for the next millennium.

Michigan’s black bear population grew 25% between 2012 and 2022, and as the population increases so do complaints of bear nuisance behavior.

As of 2022, Michigan was home to over 12,000 black bears, more than 10,000 of which can be found in the Upper Peninsula, according to the most recent data from the wildlife division of the state Department of Natural Resources.

Keep Backyard Birds Safe this Winter

For backyard bird lovers, winter can be a risky time for our feathered friends. Avian influenza is still circulating, making it critical to follow safe bird feeding practices. The state Department of Natural Resources offers tips to keep birds healthy while providing needed calories:

Use tube or window feeders rather than platform styles to minimize seed scatter and large animal access.

Change birdbath water every other day and regularly scrub with a vinegar solution.

Sanitize feeders weekly with a diluted bleach solution to prevent disease spread.

Following basic cleanliness guidelines allows us to enjoy winter bird feeding while ensuring we don't inadvertently transmit illnesses. With some simple precautions, we can supplement the birds' natural food sources until spring.

The Michigan Bluebird Society is proud and pleased to announce the 2024 Spring Bluebird Festival. We will be returning to Ann Arbor for this festival. It will be held in the Morris Lawrence Building on the campus of Washtenaw Community college. MBS held a largely attended festival there in 2018. Help us celebrate our 20th anniversary and the continued success of bluebirds across the state. Come out and learn more about America's most beloved bird - the Eastern Bluebird - and how you can help it and other native nesting birds to survive and thrive! https://michiganbluebirds.org/springfestival?blm_aid=569297921

The National Audubon Society is pushing hard for the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act. This bill would expand funding for the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act grant program. The program would increase investment in conservation projects to help migratory species.
