Bids for a project to modify Rochester’s Silver Lake Dam and to make other changes to the lake have come in millions of dollars over budget.

Estimates presented to the Rochester City Council last year indicated the project came with a $15.1 million price tag.

The plans call for replacing the Silver Lake Dam with a series of cascading pools, dredging the lake, modifying the shore line along part of West Silver Lake Dr., installing a pedestrian/biking bridge east of North Broadway and adding a biking/walking path on the north shore of the lake.

Rochester first responders are set to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

Members of the Rochester Fire and Police Departments and the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office are inviting the public to a memorial ceremony Friday morning.

A memorial stair climb will follow the program.

The Rochester City Council has rejected an appeal that would’ve halted an overhaul of the Silver Lake dam and parts of the lake’s shoreline.

David Morrill and Greg Munson, who are members of the neighborhood group “Friends of Silver Lake” and own property adjacent to the park were the appellants.

They argued the city’s Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) did not follow city procedure and did not have a public hearing on the issue, resulting in a decision that “did not fully consider the effect of the work on the eligibility of Silver Lake for the National Register of Historic Places,” the agenda item says.

First responders were called to multiple drug overdoses in Rochester during the Labor Day weekend.

The Rochester Police Department says two of the suspected overdoses, one involving a Rochester woman and the other involving an Austin man, were fatal.

A preliminary investigation indicates narcotics containing fentanyl may have been contributing factors in the two deaths, police say.
