This is always a hard time of year for me.
On the evening of 21st July 1983, I was playing in the small grove near our family home in Kingstanding, Birmingham, like I did most nights. My best mate Paul Smith and I were out playing curbys. just two kids making the most of summer, the night before the end of the school term.
That night, Paul’s mom said I could stay over. I was excited but my mum said no. I can’t even remember why.
We said goodbye like we always did, not knowing it would be the last time.
Later that night, the sound of fire engines echoed through the night. Because of the fire strike at the time, it wasn’t the usual engines it was the old army Green Goddesses. They kept coming for hours.
The next morning, we were told the unthinkable Paul, his mum, and his newborn baby sister had died in a house fire.
42 years have passed, and I’ve never forgotten that night. To some, it might have been a near-death experience. For me, it was the night I lost a good friend who never got the chance to grow up.
Rest in peace, Paul. You’re always remembered

Being a Dad, a stepdad, or Mom thats both mom and dad and Grandparent. It's about being perfect. It's about being there, even when it’s hard. Trying your best, even when you don’t have all the answers.

It’s a privilege to love, to guide, and to be someone they can come to — no matter what for all the generations of the family blood or not we chose to take on that role.

So here’s to all the dads, stepdads, Mom’s and grandads out there who keep trying, keep caring, and keep being the best they can.
